Mortal Kombat 1 has had a huge week in early access but the title finally made its way to general release on September 19th. On this same day, we saw its first esports event take place with the MK 1 Launch event. This was a double elimination bracket tournament taking place as a LAN, live in Las Vegas. These early tournaments are a great chance to get a look at which players are at the top of their game for the new title, and 2ez has marked himself out by winning the very first Mortal Kombat 1 post-release event.

There are quite a few early tournaments on the books to celebrate the launch of MK 1. Most are being held over the weekend, but one MK 1 launch event has already wrapped up. Valhallan Esports’ in-person LAN was one of the first to take place for the most anticipated fighting games. The event was hosted in Las Vegas with an official livestream on Kick from Vegas Inferno. This is what we learnt from the tournament.

2eZ Wins Mortal Kombat 1 Launch Event

2eZ was definitely the prime player to watch at this tournament. He started out in the winners’ side of the bracket and had a near-flawless run through to the final. He beat sloppygunner 2-0, and repeated that flawless score against Flursh, and EMPR Menzo.

In the Winners Final, he faced Bishop who gave him a bit more trouble. The player still managed to win 3-1 and head through to the Grand Final though. This was a rematch between the two. Rather than closing the gap though, 2eZ had an even more impressive round easily winning out 3-0.

This kind of dominant early performance is a good sign for the Mortal Kombat 1 player. While these early tournaments won’t have all the best players in one place yet, they’re a good look at who the standout players are. It definitely looks like 2eZ will be one to watch at future Mortal Kombat fighting game esports events.

Along with hosting this major tournament, the entirety of Las Vegas felt MK-themed for the launch event. The Sphere, a large ball screen, even got a Mortal Kombat makeover to celebrate the launch of the new game.

While more for the game than the MK 1 launch event, this display still added a sense of grandeur. Great to see considering the release meant MK 1 missed the last big Vegas event for fighting games, EVO.
