The first part of Rebel Moon will be released on Netflix in December 2023. If you’re already excited about the sci-fi universe, you can look forward to a packed future
Zack Snyder won’t be releasing a Star Wars film at the end of 2023, but Rebel Moon comes pretty close. And although his sci-fi franchise by and for Netflix hasn’t even really got off the ground yet, a lot is already being made of it.
(Maybe) the big sci-fi highlight of 2023
What Rebel Moon actually is? Originally conceived as a Star Wars film, director Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen, Batman v Superman) has turned it into a sci-fi universe of its own. With a budget of 166 million US dollars, the first part will be released on the streaming service in December and the second in April 2024.
What you can expect from the first part of Rebel Moon on December 22, 2023, can be seen in the official trailer for Netflix’s big sci-fi hopeful:
A bulging rebel moon

First zombies, now sci-fi: So you can see that Netflix has high hopes for Rebel Moon – not unlike Snyder’s Army of the Dead, which has at least already received a film prequel in the form of Army of Thieves. The animated prequel series Lost Vegas has since been canceled, while there have been no updates on the planned Planet of the Dead film sequel – you can read more about this from our colleagues at (Filmstarts).
According to co-writer Kurt Johnstad, all the content for Rebel Moon is based on a fictional universe that already spans a timeline of around 800 years Zack Snyder doesn’t write all the content for Rebel Moon himself, but as the self-appointed gatekeeper, he ultimately has the final say on what can and can’t happen in the sci-fi canon.
What are your hopes and expectations for Rebel Moon and how much do you like the trailers released so far? What do you think is the biggest sci-fi highlight of the year so far – both in terms of movies and series? Let us know in the comments – we’d love to hear your opinion!
