Every Pokemon in the Pokemon games has a type. Types are some of the most important stats that can decide if a Pokemon is good or bad in a specific battle match up.

Each type comes with both offensive and defensive advantages. This tree of typing become even more complicated when a Pokemon has 2 types. Generation 9’s Scarlet and Violet introduced Tera Types. This allows one Pokemon on the team per battle to change its primary type.

Dual Type Pokemon

Pokemon, especially fully evolved ones, often have 2 types. These 2 types keep their independent resistances, making them even more powerful. However, the 2x damage of super effective matched with 0.5x damage from not very effective will even out to standard 1x damage.

The order of typing matters more than ever now. Before generation 9’s Terastallizing, a Fire + Flying and a Flying + Fire had the same types. Now, thanks to the new mechanic letting you change your primary type, the order matters. Both Pokémon having a Water Tera Type, after Terastallizing, the first pokemon would become Water + Flying, becoming 4x weak to Electric type attacks. The second would be Water + Fire, which would become weak to Ground type attacks due to no longer being Flying type.

Best Pokemon Types – VCG Battles

In the Pokemon Video Game Championship competitive format – VGC Doubles, there are common types for roles. These are made more apparent by Terastallizing too.

Offensively: Ground type has the most super effective targets in the game. Ice type coverage helps keep most Dragon types in check as their second types often are also weak to Ice.

Defensively: Steel type, with its 9 resistances and 1 immunity is the strongest wall. Bulky water type Pokemon have uncommon weaknesses.

Colors in Pokemon TCG

In most cases, TCG Pokemon condenses Pokemon down to 1 type. There do exist some dual type cards but they are a rarity. This keeps things simpler but means you need to be more focused on your deck builds to ensure you have the right type match ups.
