Three days after winning the LoL 2023 World Championship, T1 confirms the return of the legendary coach, Kim “kkOma” Jeong-gyun.
T1 kkOma returns as head coach for 2024
Initially reported by Kukmin Ilbo, the Korean head coach was set to return to T1. On the night of November 21, T1 made the announcement official through a video posted on X.
With the agency transfer window officially opened, there have been several moves in the LCK, and T1 is no exception. Tom shifted from Interim Head Coach to Coach while Sky and Roach left the team.
Now that season 13 is over, it will be intriguing to see what kkOma and Faker will do going into the 2024 season. The Korean mid laner and Oner are the only players still contracted to T1, as Zeus, Gumayusi, and Keria have all had their contracts expire on November 20. Despite winning the world championship, it’s unclear whether all five members will stick together.
kkOma’s career in League of Legends
Widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in the history of LoL esports, Kim started his coaching career in 2013. Under his guidance, he led SKT T1 to three World titles and several LCK titles, proving himself as the most decorated coach.
At the end of 2019, kkOma joined Chinese Vici Gaming but the results didn’t work out, which brought him back to Korea on DAMWON Gaming, where he won the 2020 world title and was runner-up in 2021. The coach ended up remaining on the DWG squad until the end of 2022 as Athletic Director, before taking a break. He returned for a short period of time as the head coach for the South Korean national team at the 2022 Asian Games, taking the gold medal. After nearly one year away from the esports scene, kkOma is back to compete alongside T1 and Faker at the age of 37.
