It has been confirmed in a report published by WindowsCentral that Call of Duty’s 2024 title will be ‘Black Ops: Gulf War’. This corroborates earlier reports that the game would be set in the early 1990s, continuing the Black Ops franchise and pushing it in a direction it has never been before – the Gulf War. It has every potential to be a hard-hitting, sensitive game, given the setting and the reported subject matter of the title – which we’ll explore further down this article.

There are already a fair few rumours circulating about COD 2024, such as the game bringing back ’round-based’ Zombies. There were a few leaks that were doing the rounds several months ago that showed hazy images of military technology that was prevalent during the Gulf War, which is where the first pointers started surfacing. With this latest insider report from WindowsCentral, it has been confirmed: it’s Black Ops: Gulf War.

What Comes Next?

This all-new Treyarch title scheduled for release in 2024 will technically be ‘Black Ops 6’, but that’s almost certainly not the name of the game. In the report published by WindowsCentral, it was suggested that a few codenames have been passed around, but the final name hasn’t been settled on just yet. So, what does this mean for the next instalment of Call of Duty?

Well, it’s a sign that we’re sticking with ‘boots on the ground’ gameplay for another year, as a game set in the Gulf War can only be rooted in reality. Historically, the first Gulf War (Gulf 1) ran from August 1990 to January 1991, incorporating forces from a US-led coalition facing off against Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi army. It was a short-lived but bloody war, and it featured the largest tank battles in American military history.

Reportedly, we’ll see Woods make a return to the screen, as the game will focus on the CIA’s involvement in the Gulf War – ‘Operation Desert Storm’. As is typical, we can expect to see a multi-perspective approach to the game, showing the war from various viewpoints. It’s almost guaranteed we’ll see a tank battle, but we can also expect slower, stealthier scenes. There may also be air-based missions, as during the heavily televised war, bombing raids were always making the news.

Is This The One?

Call of Duty is in a precarious place right now. It has been an ‘up and down’ franchise in the last few years, never hitting the mark hard enough to really resonate with players and draw positive feedback on a universal scale. From bad development decisions to the ever-present issues with SBMM and balancing, Call of Duty is finding itself in an increasingly sticky spot. There’s no doubt that Black Ops is one of the favoured sub-franchises in the Call of Duty series, but is it enough to reclaim lost ground?
