The DualSense Edge costs a lot of money as a premium controller for the PS5 – but owners are probably not immune to quality defects

In addition to the regular controllers, both Microsoft and Sony offer special high-end controllers for their consoles, which should score points with additional buttons, better comfort and longer battery life.

For the Xbox Series X/S, this is the Elite Controller 2, which has been on the market for several years. For the PlayStation 5, however, the “DualSense Edge” has only been available since January 2023; the premium controller is therefore still comparatively young.

After the first ten months or so since release, the first quality problems with the PlayStation controller, which costs a good 200 euros, now seem to be making themselves felt. This is reported by the portal (404Media) citing its own experiences as well as some social media messages.

Concretely, it should be about the rubberized handles, which probably swell after a few months and sometimes even come off completely.

The author of the 404Media article, Joseph Cox, speaks of a behavior “like a banana peel” and had to complain to the manufacturer about the DualSense Edge after less than a year.

On (platforms such as X) and Reddit, there are numerous other user reports complaining about similar problems with the PlayStation 5’s premium controller:

For the affected owners of the DualSense Edge, it is clear from the increasing frequency of complaints that this is a general problem with the controller – which is “unacceptable” at a price of 200 euros.

In individual problem reports, the duration of use does not seem to play a major role; the controller therefore forms the bubbles (even with little usage time).

@AskPlayStation I bought my Dualsense Edge around March and noticed both sides of the rubber grip are bubbling and lifting. I barely used it and notice multiple people are having same issues. It’s also Is this a common defect? Is this covered under warranty? pic.twitter.com/PyqOrLwZnu

Taking these factors into account, one could assume that these are neither classic signs of wear nor operating errors. Instead, the DualSense Edge may have a general quality problem that occurs regardless of the usual factors

Until there are more detailed investigations into the problem, however, the actual cause remains unclear.

At least Sony seems to be replacing the faulty DualSense controllers without any problems and free of charge, as a further (X article suggests). Sony itself has not yet issued an official statement on the allegations surrounding the expensive controller

Just got a replacement DualSense Edge controller!

Sent mine to Sony as the grip was peeling off and the trigger had started squeaking – they simply replaced it with a new one.

This one has clicky buttons too, my original’s Circle was very sensitive and was easily pressed
