Many of the most iconic fighters across history have stayed relevant, with new sequels as well as ports and remakes of the original titles over the years. A title that sometimes ranks amongst the best fighting games of all time but doesn’t get as much love is Virtua Fighter 3. The 90s Arcade title was pretty advanced for its time, but the series hasn’t been so prominent in the years since. A new Virtua Fighter 3 online version is coming out today though.

The series is finally receiving a follow up bringing in some modern features, particularly online play. However, it won’t be an accessible title you can simply download and boot up. True to its roots, this comeback of sorts for the series is going to be strictly arcade.

Virtua Fighter 3 Online Edition Coming to Arcades

The last mainline version of the Virtua Fighter series was Virtua Fighter 5, originally released in 2006. Since then, the franchise has been quieter, but Sega is rectifying this with its upcoming Virtua Fighter 3 online release. The series is getting a new instalment custom-made for arcades.

This new version of the game keeps the balance and positive features of the original. Jumping back in, players will find it an authentic recreation of the original. However, it’s also going to feature some changes like online play. While this version of the game is still Arcade bound, it will be part of Sega’s ALL.Net network. Essentially, players in arcades everywhere will be able to fight each other through online play.

This new update helps to keep the series relevant, even as an arcade-only experience. In the past, titles in the series from the arcades have found their way onto home devices eventually. Hopefully, this new release proves successful enough that we might even see a revival in the series. It could even rank among the top fighting games. Sega isn’t the most known for fighting games anymore. It would be interesting to see where they’d take the Virtua Fighter series with a more modern instalment.
