As the 2023 esports season comes to a close, Tencent has pulled the curtains on the 2024 PUBG Mobile Esports roadmap. With the game’s esports scene maturing as it enters its fifth year, the upcoming season will be about establishing partnered leagues which are beneficial for organizations while supporting some grassroots-level tournaments.
Here’s everything that Tencent has revealed about the 2024 esports roadmap.
4 PUBG Mobile Super Leagues (PMSLs) to be established globally
The PUBG Mobile Pro Leagues (PMPLs) are being replaced with the Super Leagues in 2024. The PMSL was first launched earlier in 2023 for SEA only. As a part of this, Tencent partnered up with 15 teams who were given guaranteed slots in the tournament. At the time, the developer said that it could expand the format to more regions given its success.
Now, Tencent has made a major commitment to the PMSL as it will be the new top-level regional esports league for PUBG Mobile. There will be four PMSLs which will be established in 2024, encompassing the entire world. These are as follows:
Southeast Asia (SEA) PMSL
EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa) PMSL
Americas PMSL
Central and South Asia PMSL
These four PMSLs will be long tournaments and will also happen as offline events. The tournament will guarantee slots to the partnered teams, with the exact number of partnered teams in each region undisclosed, except for SEA, which will have 15 partnered teams.
Unlike the traditional franchise model, the PUBG Mobile partnered leagues. James Yang, the senior director for PUBG Mobile Global Esports, said that the teams didn’t have to pay a buy-in or registration fee to be a part of the partnered league. The reason for the leagues is for Tencent to have a mutually beneficial partnership. The developer will be able to provide guaranteed slots and support to the organizations who can now pledge increased investment into the esport.
Grassroots-level competitions
In 2024, there will be PMSL regional qualifiers to give new teams a chance at competing in PUBG Mobile Esports’ biggest stages.
Additionally, there will be smaller regional leagues including the PUBG Mobile Club Open (PMCO) and National Championships (PMNC).
Three international tournaments to happen in the PUBG Mobile Esports 2024 roadmap
PUBG Mobile Global Open (PMGO)
The PMGO is the first international tournament in 2024. Its first season will take place in Brazil from March to April and will feature a $500,000 prize pool.
Teams will qualify for it through a host region qualifier, regional PMSL qualifiers, and the PMSL Partnership teams.
PMWI replaced with a new mid-season tournament
The PMWI will no longer happen in 2024. Instead, Tencent is replacing it with a mid-season tournament. Additionally, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, will be playing host to it.
While Tencent hasn’t confirmed it yet, this will likely be a part of the newly-launched Esports World Cup by Saudi Arabia.
PMGC to wrap up the year
One thing that will remain constant in 2024 is the PUBG Mobile Global Championship to close off the year. This will again take place in November and December to crown a new world champion.
