Development studio Motion Twin landed a surprise hit in 2018 with Dead Cells, and Windblown is set to repeat the success in 2024

The indie hit Dead Cells is often mentioned when it comes to the best small games on Steam. After all, it can boast around 140,000 positive user reviews, which speaks for one of the best roguelikes of recent years. In the GlobalESportNews test, Dead Cells scored a full 80 points. The game has made a name for itself with its extremely fast pace and action-packed battles. The pixelated but very stylish visuals round off the harmonious overall picture wonderfully.

During the Game Awards 2023, the studio behind Dead Cells finally announced a quasi-sequel. No, not Dead Cells 2, but Windblown. A completely new roguelike in a new world and with a new look. However, little has changed in terms of the core strengths of its predecessor

This is Windblown

As with Dead Cells, Windblown will once again offer extremely fast combat in which you can evade your opponents’ attacks thanks to lightning-fast dashes and then strike back effectively. This time, however, you can jump in all possible directions, as Windblown will be a 3D game that relies on an isometric camera perspective.

In terms of content, you wake up in the role of so-called leapers on an ark in the middle of a huge vortex. Leapers are small, anthropomorphic animals such as lizards, bats or axolotls. That sounds cute and the world is as colorful as it is comic-like, but at least judging by the first trailer, it’s still pretty bloody

As in many roguelikes, death plays a decisive role. To defeat the powerful, robot-like bosses and their henchmen, you have to collect the memories of your previous lives and can use them to become stronger and stronger or change your build on the fly.

So be prepared for lots of deaths and dangerous enemies. If the going gets too tough, you can also ask up to three friends for help and then set off in co-op.

The new game does not yet have a release date, but it is set to go into early access in 2024

What is your opinion on Windblown? Are you a fan of Dead Cells and looking forward to the release of a sequel in the spirit in the near future? Or have you been less impressed with Dead Cells so far and are you still looking forward to Windblown or are you not convinced by this game either? Let us know in the comments below
