Gothic fans are ecstatic: The role-playing game could look this realistic in 2023

According to publisher THQ Nordic, the eagerly awaited Gothic 1 Remake will finally be released next year, giving the role-playing classic much better graphics.

Gothic fan Jorgenson is already showing on his Gothic channel how many of the iconic characters could look in more realistic visuals – and the reactions to his video have been overwhelmingly positive.

KI images delight Gothic fans

Jorgenson’s video, published on YouTube, shows how characters such as Lee, Raven and Cor Kalom are reinterpreted with impressive detail using AI technology. Fans particularly praise the fact that the seriousness of the characters is maintained and a silly look is avoided

Many fans are particularly impressed by the realistic depiction of the monsters and the fidelity to the original characters. The portrayal of characters such as Lee, the nameless hero, and his mage buddy Milten is particularly emphasized. Some people (in the comments) even dream of a gothic movie with these images.

Other fan reactions read as follows:

Old…how badass the monsters look with the graphics. Simply awesome. Now all that’s missing is the whole game in the graphics…

This makes the original faces look pretty old

Wacky! Somehow the faces seemed so realistic to me back in my childhood

I like it best so far! Lee is really well done. Milten is absolutely awesome. The hero is also great. Diego and Saturas are a bit too old for me but also ok. Velaya is amazingly good. Only Gorn (Morgan Freeman?) and Lares I would never recognize. But it makes you want to see a gothic movie or at least the remake

How the pictures were taken

Jorgenson used the website (Krea.AI) to create the images. The same effect can also be achieved with Stable Diffusion, an open-source AI technology developed specifically for generating images.

Img2img in Stable Diffusion is a function that makes it possible to edit and transform existing images by generating new images based on the original image content.

This technique uses artificial intelligence, in particular neural networks, to analyze the existing image and transform pixel mush into realistic characters. As the AI models were trained using images of real people, the faces in the final result look almost lifelike.

Here are two more small examples that we created ourselves:

Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)

Kate Archer (No One Lives Forever)

How do you like the reworked characters from Gothic? Do you think the new look is coherent or did you imagine something else with the pixelated faces of the original? And which other classic games would you like to rediscover through this AI lens? Share your thoughts and suggestions in the comments
