Perhaps the most controversial part of Smash Bros Ultimate in recent years has been Steve. The Minecraft protagonist was the final DLC addition to Smash Ultimate characters, but he proved a bit too powerful for the game’s balance. Or, at least according to some fans, he’s completely OP. For the first time in Ultimate, a character has even been banned in some places. Although recently, the Steve Coinbox ban was reopened with the potential to bring the character back.

Steve has been controversial for a while and more techs keeps getting found. However, for the large part bans have slowed down. Steve players have been defeated at plenty of tournaments, it seemed like the major problem with Steve might be passing. Hungrybox has reopened discussion over the Steve Coinbox ban, but things haven’t changed much after the public had their say.

Steve Coinbox Ban Opened back Up from Hungrybox

The Steve Coinbox ban has been in place for quite a while. Hungrybox made the decision to ban the character in his Coinbox tournaments. While a few other tournaments followed, the Coinbox ban didn’t end up inspiring a widespread ban. He’s also going to be allowed at the upcoming Coinbox IRL tournament. What about the weekly events though? Is Steve getting back on the roster for regular tournaments?

Hungrybox held a poll to decide if the Steve Coinbox ban would remain active or not. While there are merits to both sides of the discussion ultimately the bans had it. The ban stands.

Steve won’t be banned at Coinbox IRL, but the bans on the ongoing online events will remain. Playing online is always quite a bit different to a LAN, and that’s a factor with Steve. The character is potentially more potent when played online. Having the character unbanned for upcoming in-person events keeps things fair. However, it’s hard to argue with the crowd who wanted Steve to remain banned at Coinbox online.
