This week we’ve had a particularly disappointing announcement about an older instalment of Smash. As we’re reaching the end of the Switch’s lifespan, Nintendo has announced the date that they’ll be shutting down the online for both the Wii U and 3DS. This means that Smash 4 will no longer be playable online. Just before it finishes off though, we’re getting a new Smash Wii U Coinbox tournament!

Smash 4 Wii U and 3DS is definitely an underrepresented version of the game in 2024. This title might be the most recent before Ultimate, but it’s the least played right now. Even in the new Nintendo tournament guidelines, Smash for Wii U is mysteriously missing. Going offline will make these tournaments even harder to organize. That’s why it’s great to see the Smash Wii U Coinbox being held. Hungrybox has decided to throw one more event for this version of Smash Bros, happening right before we see the servers turned off.

Smash Wii U Coinbox Coming in April

The Smash Wii U Coinbox tournament has been announced by Hungrybox this week. As we’re seeing the servers going offline, they’re taking the opportunity to host a final online event for the Wii U version of the game. Coinbox is a regular series of tournaments, usually for Melee and Ultimate. They’ve recently expanded out though, even holding in-person events like Coinbox IRL. This latest tournament is another departure bringing a different game to the Coinbox roster.

Hungrybox has already announced the new Smash 4 Coinbox. It’s taking place on April 3rd, 2024. The tournament series has been holding more events for different games lately, like Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2. This new tournament adds a third Smash game to the line-up. This will be a one-off event, held online. We’ll see some of the best Smash players jumping back into those lobbies one last time.

By the end of its competitive life, some clear problems with Smash 4 have been found. Unbalanced DLC characters made tournaments tricky to keep fair. However, as an online one-off, this will definitely be a fun event. We’ll get to see an older version of Smash get one last outing before the servers go forever.

The Smash Wii U Coinbox will likely see some of the same problems, with DLC characters like Bayonetta dominating things. It’s a fun reminder of where competitive Smash Bros esports once stood though.
