Overwatch is one of the biggest Esports titles in the world. It has a huge following, and the skill level in the top tiers of the game is pretty high. The best Overwatch players in the world are those that sit right on top of this skill level.
These are the players who push the definitions of what is possible in the game’s new esports, and the old Overwatch League. Power rankings were great, but without the formal League format things will be a bit more complicated.
With a new esports format coming for Overwatch, there’s going to be increased interest in the competitive side of the game. We won’t get the same teams returning to the game. Some of the same players likely will be returning though. Even for the new players, those who reached the heights of winning the OWL are a great example of how far you can take this game. Who are those top flight of competitors, the best Overwatch players?
The Best Overwatch 2 Players
With Overwatch esports basically done after the end of last year, we had a few adjustments. A lot of players left. There wasn’t a huge future for the game and we saw major changes to a lot of rosters and active players. The Finals are still an impressive display of what can be done with Overwatch 2. We can’t bank on any of these players jumping back in the 2024 season of competitive Overwatch. However, these are a great example for those new teams to look at for how far they can take things.
5. Ch0r0ng
Ch0r0ng is a Korean player who made up part of Florida Mayhem’s 2023 OWL winning squad. The Support player was a vital part of the team that won the very final playoffs, up there as one of the strongest supports in the game. He had a decent run across Overwatch tournaments, making the jump up to the League proper in 2021. He only served on the Florida Mayhem for a single season. Given it was the season that cemented Florida’s place though, it was definitely impactful.
4. Checkmate
Checkmate is another Korean former Florida Mayhem player who makes the list of the best Overwatch players. While only 22, he’s been playing Overwatch since 2019 professionally. He made the jump up to Florida Mayhem in 2020 and was a key part of their teams’ growth. Checkmate was on the roster that took the Florida Mayhem through their 7-8th place finish, to full Champions.
He hasn’t entirely checked out of Overwatch since the League ended either. Checkmate has stuck around playing in the Saudi eLeague. He’ll be a key contender once we start the new format for OW esports.
3. Rupal
Rupal is a rare non-Korean player who has made the current list of best Overwatch players! He’s another member of last year’s champions, the Florida Mayhem. As the second Support player, he along with Checkmate was key in their victory.
He’s only 21 years old, having played for various teams since 2020. Rupal is now part of a University team and could carry on as an impressive player in OW in 2024. He finished last year winning the Flash Ops Holiday Showdown, so has definitely kept on top of the game’s tournaments.
2. Someone
Getting towards the top of the best Overwatch players, we’re not just looking at last years’ Champions. There are players like Someone who have stood out for honors within the League as individuals too. In the last season, he not only was part of the Champion squad but won the overall 2023 Overwatch League MVP. Since then, he’s gone on to come third in the Saudi eLeague, so could definitely still be a contender in 2024’s OW esports.
1. Mer1t
With all the changes to the ecosystem, it is difficult to pick a single best active OW player. The MBP of the Grand Final for winning Florida Mayhem might be the closest to that though. Mer1t performed fantastically in the final, securing the final Champion status for Florida.
Mer1t is a particularly important part of the last OWL Champion Squad. Not only did the player perform well in the matches that saw them grasp their title, but he also walked away with the MVP award. Out of the entire game, Mer1t was definitely the standout. It’ll be players like Merit which show what can be done in Overwatch when the new format starts back up.
10. Lee “Happy” Jeongwoo
Happy is another Houston Outlaws player who is somewhere among the best Overwatch 2 players. As a DPS, he’s a big part of his team’s performance and Happy has been putting in really solid performances this season. So far in 2023, Houston has missed out a couple of times, coming 2nd in the midseason Madness and 3-4th in the Pro-Am. While he doesn’t have the pedigree of some Dallas players, Houston could be staging a comeback this year and Happy is a key part of that.
9. Kim “Bliss” So-Myung
Bliss just makes the list for the best Overwatch 2 players thanks to the great 2023 season he’s been a part of. Bliss is on Duel Fuel right now, the team that sits right at the top of the Overwatch League 2023 power rankings.
As a Support, he’s a key part of this team. Prior to Dallas Fuel, bliss primarily played in Contenders so he is a bit more untested compared to other inclusions here. He was part of a squad there which did great things in 2022 though, and his 2023 season is showing he can cut it in the main League too. As one of the supports to make the best Overwatch players, it’ll be interesting to see if he has any cool pans for the new Support hero.
8. Eui-Seok “Fearless” Lee
If you’re wondering who is the best Overwatch player, Fearless has been on that list for quite a while. He’s now a part of Houston Outlaws and has been on the rise again this season. Most recently they took 2nd at the Midseason Madness. Before this, he was a key part of Dallas Fuel during their 2022 Championship season. He’s played for Element, Shanghai Dragons, and Team CC prior to that. He’s won events and contributed to great performances with each of these teams. It is hard to argue that Fearless isn’t a big part of the top tier of Overwatch.
Fearless is a tank player, but a very flexible one with a good number of signature heroes. He’s easily one of the best Overwatch 2 players.
7. Park “Viol2t” Min-Ki
Viol2t is another Houston player with solid performance across 2022 and 2023. He’s not quite made the winning squad with them but has managed a 2nd place finish at 2022’s playoffs and the Midseason Madness. Prior to this, he was part of the squad at Shock that set the standard for what the best overwatch players are. He’s still part of the game and one of the players to stay a top competitor for a long time.
6. Kim “Fleta” Byung-Sun
Fleta is another player who has been with the League for quite a while but remained one of the best Overwatch 2 players. He’s been with Shanghai since 2019. A crazy run of time, and before this he was part of Seoul Dynasty. He’s one of the players still around with past Playoff wins and he’s still putting in great performances. He routinely places highly on the OWL power rankings.
5. Han-been “Hanbin” Choi
Hanbin is a Tank player for Dallas Fuel. He’s part of the squad that has been on top of the Overwatch League since the opening weeks of this season. He’s been with Dallas since 2020, making a lot more headway than his previous role at Paris Eternal.
Hanbin’s been part of the league since the 2019 season too, while spending 2018 in the contenders. He’s made a name for himself in every branch of the Overwatch League, and he’s one of the best Overwatch 2 players currently active.
4. Perk “Profit” Joon-Yeong
Profit is a Seoul Dynasty DPS who has been with the team since 2019, when he left London Spitfire. He’s an older player, having been in OW since 2017. He can still claim to be one of the best overwatch 2 players though. He’s even a former MVP winner.
Profit might not have had the biggest impact in the 2022 playoffs, but he’s been strong this season. Seoul Dynasty is edging up on Dallas Fuel this year and Profit could be a bit part of finally overtaking them. If that happens, he’ll be much higher in future run-downs of the best Overwatch players.
3. Kim “Edison” Tae-Hoon
Edison is another Dallas Fuel player who has been at the top of the game lately. He’s the DPS for the highest-ranking Overwatch League team, playing a mix of characters over the years. At this squad, he’s got a Playoff win under his belt from 2022, but looks like he might be making it back-to-back in 2023.
Edison has played for loads of teams in his six years in the League. He’s been with Dallas Fuel since 2021 though. Essentially, he’s a large part of why this team has risen to the top in recent years, and he looks set to help keep them there.
2. Jun-woo “Void” Kang
Void is a player for Seoul Dynasty in 2023, making the jump over from Shanghai Dragons after a very brief retirement. In his time in the game, he’s won the playoffs in 2021 along with plenty of the midseason tournaments over the years. As Seoul’s Tank, there’s a lot on him to perform in these games but he manages to hold things down. He’s one of the strongest Tank players as a whole and one of the best Overwatch 2 players.
1. Kim “SP9K1E” Yeong-Han
While a lot of the players in the higher end of the League could take the no. 1 spot for the best Overwatch 2 players in 2023, we’ve got SP9K1E just pushing leading out ahead in front. He’s another member of the Dallas Fuel squad, playing DPS as Tracer and others. He’s been with the team since in 2020, in that time taking them from 3rd in 2021, to Champions in 2022, and looking strong to repeat it in 2023. It’s hard to argue with results, and Sp9k1E has stayed one of the best Overwatch players for a few consecutive seasons now.
10. Dong-jun “Rascal” Kim
Rascal is one of the top Overwatch players of all time because of his versatility. He is rightfully judged as one of the best flex players out there. Rascal can shift from DPS to support easily, getting both kills and heals. He is a fantastic utility for any team to have. Rascal has an excellent understanding of the game that allows him to switch between roles easily. This kind of approach is vital.
He was part of the SF six that dominated the 2019 and 2020 seasons. He’s now moved over to Fusion.
9. Hyo-bin “ChoiHyoBin” Choi
Choihyobin is another player for San Francisco Shock who stands out as one of the best Overwatch players in the world.
He is particularly adept at picking up players, functioning as a fantastic tank for his team. His skills have been shown off a lot in the Overwatch League, but especially in 2019’s grand finals. He was completely essential to those games, showing him to be one of the best Overwatch players. He even has MVP awards to back that up. Like a few Shock players, he has struggled a bit more in 2021.
However, things could turn back around for the player soon.
8. Matthew “Super” DeLisi
In the 2019 Season of Overwatch, Super was likely the best tank currently active. Asking who is the best Overwatch player of that season would have had super is one of the top choices. He plays a dominant Tank and controlled games throughout many seasons. He is part of Shock and has been since 2017. The team hasn’t had the strongest 2021. However, Super’s performances have remained as strong as ever, even with harder competition.
While Shock’s current Season isn’t going too well, Super hasn’t been shaken too much.
7. Jin-hyeok “DDing” Yang
DDing is one of the best projectile players currently active in Overwatch. He’s been on the top of his game for soon time and is unlikely to take a drop in performance any time soon. DDing is part of Shanghai. His personal contributions to this season have been big. Super is both one of the best Overwatch players and a dominant force in the 2021 season of the Overwatch League.
DDing currently plays DPS, but with a wide pool of heroes to draw upon. As part of a versatile squad, his DPS performance routinely clutches games and rounds for the team.
6. Jun-woo “Void” Kang
Void is a player for Shanghai Dragons, one of the breakout squads for this Season. He’s been part of the team since 2019 but previously played for LA Gladiators. In all, he’s been part of the pro-overwatch since 2017 in contenders. This long history with the team has really contributed to his standing. He often sits pretty high in the power rankings for his team, and he’s one of the best Overwatch players in the world. Void typically plays Sigma, D.Va, Zarya, and Roadhog.
5. Min-jun “Piggy” Shin
Piggy is a more recent addition to the Overwatch League. Despite being 21, he’s mainly been playing in contenders up until last Season. Since then, he’s been a part of Houston Outlaws as an off-tank player. While they’re not the top team in the league, Houston have had a great season. PIGGY’s tank helps to establish a solid defense for the team and he’s one of the best Overwatch players in this role. He usually players Zarya, D.Va, or Sigma.
4. Jae-won “Lip” Lee
Lip is currently an important part of Shanghai Dragons, one of the best teams in the overall league. At this team, he’s set himself apart as one of the top Overwatch players. He’s been with Shanghai from the long haul, whether on top of the league or dropping. Shanghai are having a fantastic season and this seasoned player is a big part of it.
Lip is a DPS player for Shanghai. He routinely uses a pretty wide hero pool. This versatility is a major part of his success. Lip is one of the best players in the league at the moment, and he might be able to take home the 2021 grand champions trophy this year to attest to that.
3. Sung-hyeon “JJoNak” Bang
JJoNak is a support player who has become one of the most recognizably skilled players in the entire League. He can function as a great support player, but he can also slot into a role of a third DPS when needs must. He is a player who can slide from role to role, complimenting his team perfectly. This has made him one of the best Overwatch players in 2021.
JJoNak has picked up quite a few MVP awards in his time in the League. He’s been a central part of New York Excelsior since 2017, having a very long stretch with one steam. While New York aren’t setting the tone for the 2021 Season, JJoNak personally really stands out as a support and one of the best Overwatch players in the world.
2. Eui-Seok “Fearless” Lee
If you’re wondering who is the best Overwatch player, Fearless has to come close. He’s part of Dallas Fuel who have been dominating this year. However, he has a long history with the League. He’s played for Element, Shanghai Dragons, Team CC, and Dallas across this time. He’s won events and contributed to great performances with each of these teams. Having split his time between the two top teams in the 2021 season over the last few years, it is hard to argue that Fearless isn’t a big part of the top tier of Overwatch.
Fearless is another tank player, but a very flexible one with a good number of signature heroes. He’s easily one of the top Overwatch players.
1. Han-been “Hanbin” Choi
