It was just revealed that Treyarch legend, David Vonderhaar, has founded an all-new global game studio named Bulletfarm. This news comes following days of teasers posted by Vonderhaar, who recently left Treyarch after more than twenty years at the firm. He had a hand in the creation of some of the best Call of Duty games of all time, and now he’s stepping out – after being backed by NetEase – to create his studio and kickstart a fresh project.

This remote-first studio is reportedly beginning development on an ‘ambitious new AAA game set in an original universe’. It was said that it’ll have a key focus on cooperative gameplay, but beyond that, nobody knows what the first Bulletfarm game will look like.

Bring On Bulletfarm

In a statement, David Vonderhaar finally opened up about his new studio, which he has kept a secret for months:

‘Starting this new studio has given me a chance to step out of my comfort zone and try my hand at making something entirely new and different. This is a departure from the games I’ve worked on, but one that showcases my passion for rich characters, precise mechanics, more intimate storytelling, and plenty of action. NetEase has provided us an incredible support structure to explore these new avenues and allow true freedom to begin building the concept and ideas for our game.’

NetEase is a Chinese conglomerate that invests in a range of industries and markets. It has invested heavily in gaming in the last few years, securing stakes in firms like Bungie and Quantic Dream, but it has also leant on anime, film, fitness, and television studios. As a publisher and developer of games, NetEase is perfectly poised to help Bulletfarm find its feet in the earliest days of its lifecycle.

There are some tongue-in-cheek positions referenced as Bulletfarm. For instance, Vonderhaar is the ‘President of Propaganda’, while Chris Cowell – creative director – is the ‘Chief Bonfire Officer’. Rexroad Simons is hte COO and ‘Minister of Coin’, and Eric Klokstad is the Lead Environment Artist – and ‘World Sherpa’. There are several positions available on the Bulletfarm website, such as Art Director, Concept Artist, Producer, Technical Artist, and more. They’re all advertised as being remote-first roles, too.

Here’s a part of the blurb taken from the site – see if it suits you:

‘We always operate with the highest integrity—this is a zero-BS environment. We hold ourselves and each other accountable for living out our values. Sincerity isn’t an add-on; it’s a key to our success.’

Ultimately, it could be quite some time before we see anything materialise from Bulletfarm, but with David Vonderhaar driving the charge, many gamers are already excited to see what the studio can produce.
