Fortnite’s latest event did things a bit differently. Rather than an event that took over the game for a whole day like end-of-chapter events, we got something a bit more retro. Players could see a storyline developing across the map over a few days. The Fortnite Pandora Box was eventually opened up after players managed to deal over 5 trillion damage!
Fortnite players collectively blasting away at a crazy high HP bar isn’t exactly new. Epic’s done similar things in previous events. Usually, there is an element of surprise in just how quickly the Fortnite player base gets it done. This time it seems like Epic took a bit more of an active role in making sure the Fortnite Pandora Box opened up just when they wanted it to.
Fortnite Pandora Box Event
Over the past week in Fortnite, we’ve seen some changes. One of the more recent Fortnite updates began to make changes near a POI on the map. We saw cracks emerge on the map, before smoke and even lava came out. Eventually, a hand popped out of these holes. Chained to it, was a new chest.
The hand was holding Pandora’s box. In mythology, the box contained everything bad in the world but also hope. Fortnite players were tasked with opening this up. To do that they had to blast away the chains that surround the chest. These had a whopping 5 trillion HP, so that should take a while, right? It was achieved pretty quickly. Out popped a firey tornado.
How was it done so quickly? Part of that is done to Epic changing around damage values in game.
How Was the Box Opened So Quickly?
The Fortnite Pandora chest opened up very quickly, in no small part thanks to damage multipliers. Epic added a multiplier to the damage dealt to the chains. This was adjusted gradually over the course of the event being active in the game.
As the event wound on, this damage multiplier got higher and higher. This meant players needed to do less damage to get closer to taking the chains out. By the final hours of the event, the multiplier was up to 30x, massively inflating the damage numbers.
It seems that Epic had a specific date and time in mind for when the chests will open. To ensure we removed all 5 trillion health by that date, they just adjusted the damage dealt until it hit the target. It doesn’t diminish the fun of a big collective effort. Knowing it all timed out ahead of time does take away a bit of the spontaneity though.
The Fortnite Pandora Chest event will be active on the map as a tornado until the new FN season begins. It looks pretty clear we’re getting a mythology-themed outing next time around. It’s just a few days until we find out everything the new Fortnite season has to offer.
