The Finals is about to get a second season, broadening the free-to-play shooter’s arsenal immeasurably with new modes, weapons, and features. At the top of the table sits the addition of private matches and a brand-new five-vs-five game mode called Power Shift. It’s set to be a high-octane season that will welcome back thousands of players to the destructive, energetic shooter released in December with an overwhelmingly positive reception.

Embark Studios – the game’s developer – has seen a few struggles since The Finals debuted, but little has held the team back from blossoming. The game’s publisher, Nexon, recently made a bold statement that suggested The Finals will be a core part of its operating model in the future. Now, players both new and old (not that old) are preparing to welcome Season 2 of the game, which is set to be released on March 14.

The Finals, But Expanded

In the punchy, colourful trailer for Season 2, we see what’s being teased, including a hacker-themed update bursting with new content.

For players wanting new modes, Embark Studios is adding Power Shift, a five-vs-five ‘King of the Hill’ kind of mode that flexes the game’s destructive environments very well. There’s a floating platform that moves around the map, tearing it to pieces, and players must fight to take control of it as it moves. Players eager to explore this mode can do so with new weapons and abilities – and there’s a lot of power wrapped up in these gadgets and goodies.

Medium builds will be getting a new ‘Dematerialiser’ ability that allows them to blink out solid surfaces – and patch them up again in a split second. There’s also a new tool that Medium builds can use to mutate enemy defensive gadgets – like mines – into harmless objects. Heavy builds are getting an Anti-Gravity Cube that’ll help move heavy objects around the map – including the characters themselves.

Finally, there’s a unique ‘Gateway’ portal tool being added to Light builds. This will allow players to open up an interdimensional portal that teleports them across the map – but anyone can use those portals.

Each build is also getting a new weapon:

93R Burst-Fire Pistol (Light)
FAMAS Burst Rifle (Medium)
KS-23 Shotgun (Heavy)

With a new neon-splashed map, a range of features tied to private matches, and a competitive League System being introduced, this certainly is a sizeable update for The Finals.

Season 2 will be released globally on all platforms on March 14.
