Day one of the PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 has come to an end. After all the hype surrounding the first CS2 Major, did the first day live up to the lofty expectations? It was certainly an exciting day of Counter-Strike, no matter the results.
Going into the first day, some clear favorites were expected to end the day 2:0, while others were predicted to crumble under the pressure. Let’s see if that transpired on the server by looking at the surprise packages and the early disappointments so far!
The surprise packages
It’s safe to say that the first day of the PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 had a few surprise packages. First up is Imperial. The Brazilians were 18th in our PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 power rankings, and frankly, we didn’t fancy them to progress here. However, they’ve looked great so far, beating ENCE and pushing Heroic to overtime. The 1:1 bracket awaits, but in this form, Imperial should progress. Watch out for young star noway, here, who we think is destined to be the next Brazilian star.
Our next positive surprise was SAW. This Portuguese roster is in such great form at the moment, and they haven’t missed a beat heading into the PGL Major Copenhagen 2024. Playing like this, they won’t just qualify for the Elimination Stage – they might even progress from it.
ECSTATIC and Legacy also deserve a special shoutout. Both teams were expected to drop straight out of the tournament in Copenhagen, but the pair now find themselves in the 1:1 bracket. We’re not saying they’ll go through, but they’ve already done better than predicted.
The early disappointments
So, who ruined our PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 Pick’ems on day one? Well, no one yet. However, TheMongolZ and FURIA certainly are doing their best to try. Both teams were expected to progress to the Elimination Stage in Copenhagen, yet put on total disasterclasses to find themselves on the brink of elimination after just one day of play.
For FURIA, going 0:2 so far is awful. Their first match-up was against Legacy, a team we had as obvious 0:3 contenders. Yet, coldzera and friends made short work of FURIA. Next up was Lynn Vision, another of the favorites to go 0:3. That was no better, with FURIA even managing to lose a 5v2 against two pistols for Lynn Vision to reach match point. Our expectations were low, but FURIA has somehow managed to stoop way below them.
As for TheMongolZ, we were really disappointed on day one. They have always put up a great fight against top opposition, but here, they really floundered, taking silly duels at every possible moment. If anyone can come back from the 0:2 bracket, it’s TheMongolZ, but it’ll be a tough ask from here on out.
We’re also going to sneak Cloud9 in here, too. It’s tough to really classify a 2:0 team as a disappointment, but they certainly made very tough work of both ECSTATIC and Legacy, two teams they should easily be beating. With three chances in the best-of-three format, they’re still a shoo-in to progress regardless.
The next matches at PGL Major Copenhagen 2024
Get ready for another banger day of CS at the PGL Major Copenhagen 2024. We’ve got our eyes on Heroic vs. Eternal Fire and Cloud9 vs. SAW. After all, we want to know who’s going to be the first to go through to the Elimination Stage in Denmark. Elsewhere, TheMongolZ vs. AMKAL and Movistar KOI vs. FURIA will decide the first teams heading straight back to the airport, so keep a look out for the results of those matches, too.
