Raytracing, DLSS and Nvidia Reflex should bring light into the darkness of the Star Wars universe

The star system is calling and the release of Star Wars Open World Outlaws planned for 2024 is getting closer every day. Although there is no exact release date, there is still good news – at least for owners of Nvidia graphics cards.

Raytracing, DLSS 3 and Reflex on board

Nvidia recently announced a partnership with Ubisoft and Lucasfilm Games to ensure that the highly anticipated action-adventure game will feature cutting-edge technology. Not only does it support Nvidia’s proprietary DLSS 3 and Reflex technologies, but also ray-tracing effects.

How exactly ray tracing will be used in Star Wars Outlaws is not yet known: Although Nvidia has released a trailer confirming the graphics features, the video itself only shows already known scenes from the reveal trailer. We can’t see the realistic lighting, shadows and reflections that characterize the hardware-hungry technology

But you can imagine many things, such as a firefight in a spaceport on Coruscant. Each blaster shot would throw light into the surroundings, and the reflections of this light on the shiny surfaces of the spaceships and buildings would create a realistic atmosphere.

On the frozen surface of the ice planet Hoth, on the other hand, ray tracing could realistically simulate how sunlight is refracted by ice formations and snowdrifts. However, it remains to be seen whether this will happen. So far, only the planets Tatooine, Cantonica, Kijimi, Akiva and Toshara have been confirmed, of which only Luke Skywalker’s home is a little better known

The news that the game will launch with DLSS 3 is also particularly pleasing. The upscaling technology can help weaker graphics cards achieve more frames per second and massively reduce the power consumption of high-end components, such as the RTX 4090.

It is not a given that these technologies will be on board straight away. Ubisoft’s latest open-world game Avatar still has no DLSS support and only uses ray tracing for the global lighting of the game world.

At the moment, there is no exact date for the release of the new Star Wars game. There is speculation that we will probably not be able to expect the game until the end of 2024. However, Star Wars Day is taking place on May 4 – it is possible that Ubisoft will take the opportunity to present new gameplay and perhaps even the release date
