The release of PlayStation 5 has shifted the dynamic of the console gaming space after PlayStation 4 did the same almost a decade ago. Since its release, the PS5 has boasted significant improvements over its predecessor which showcases the compounding effect of improvement in different parts of the system.
Not only was PS5 much more capable, but it was ready to take on the new generation of games with state-of-the-art features like Ray Tracing. To build on the already stellar specifications of Sony’s flagship console, leaks suggest that a PS5 Pro is on its way in the coming months that will push the boundaries further of what a console can do.
Today’s leaked documents also confirmed:
- Rendering 45% faster than PS5
- 2-3x Ray-tracing (x4 in some cases)
- 33.5 Teraflops
- PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling) upscaling/antialiasing solution
- Support for resolutions up to 8K is planned for future SDK version
- Custom machine learning architecture
- AI Accelerator, supporting 300 TOPS of 8 bit computation / 67 TFLOPS of 16-bit floating point
The updated specs will focus on maintaining the performance of the next generation of AAA titles when maxed out given that PS5 users have complained of drops in frames when playing at resolutions beyond 1440p with features like ray tracing running. Over the past few years, UHD displays have become more and more common unlike the time of PS4 when 1080p was the most common resolution.
The new PS5 Pro will come with hardware improvements with changes in the software that can handle games better and more consistently. According to the leaks, it will hit the shelves during the holiday season of 2024, right in time for several major AAA titles to be released along the course of the year.
