95 percent positive reviews speak for themselves – players on Steam love the new Warhammer 40k shooter
After Darktide, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is yet another shooter in the popular grimdark sci-fi universe that”s a lot of fun – at least if you listen to what players on Steam have to say.
The retro shooter, in which you play as a Space Marine against demons and Chaos Space Marines and have to decimate entire hordes of them in 90s style, currently has 95 percent positive user ratings
Why people love Boltgun
Boltgun describes itself (on Steam) as a boomer shooter – the relatively fresh subgenre features fast, straightforward gameplay as well as, of course, the aforementioned ”90s look reminiscent of games like Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Heretic and Blood.
And that”s exactly why it”s also well received by shooter fans on Steam. BertiBert, for example, writes:
A game for 20 dollars that is not a live service and is completely finished at launch? That offers a cohesive campaign and fits nicely into the 40k storyline?
And all this in the year 2023!!!? The biggest problem with this game is that I can”t decide which weapon to use to kill, maim and exterminate the heretics.
Sir_Reginald_Duke is also reminded of a well-known 90s shooter by id Software:
I feel like I”m playing a WH40K Space Marine re-skin of the original Quake. The pixel graphics, the bad sound, the simple animations, the “kill everything that moves, find the key, open the door” gameplay, the time at the end of the level, the amount of kills, and even the way the corpses are just a 2D sprite that is always pointed directly at the player and spins on the ground to follow your movements
It”s an extremely nostalgic feeling.
The international trade press, however, is much more critical of the retro shooter: on Metacritic, the average rating is 73 points, and the reviews vary widely – from 90 to 40. Ultimately, however, a 73 stands for a mostly good game that genre fans should take a closer look at.
The fact that gamers like it better is not surprising: Boltgun is a game that knows exactly what it wants to be and made that clear when it was announced. So if you know he or she likes both old-school shooters and Warhammer 40k, you”re guaranteed a lot of fun here.
