Ubisoft sends one of its oldest characters on a new adventure. But instead of classic action-adventure, this time there’s Metroidvania-like gameplay

Ubisoft revealed a new Prince of Persia at the Summer Games Fest. But if you’re thinking gameplay like the Sands of Time trilogy, you’re sorely mistaken. The old franchise reinvents itself once again with The Lost Crown and this time relies on strong Metroidvania references.

Officially, the game is said to be an action-adventure platformer. But if you look at the Reveal trailer, you’ll probably think of Hollow Knight, Ori and the Blind Forest and the like more than once.

Gameplay and Story

You slip into the skin of the warrior Sargon, who is a member of an elite group called The Immortals. This group sets off for Mount Qaf, which quickly turns out to be a sinister place full of danger. But this is not the only location you will explore in the course of the adventure. Also mentioned are such enticing places as the Citadel of Wisdom and the Hyrcanian Woods.

As you progress through the game, you’ll learn new abilities that allow you to reach new areas – you know the gameplay loop from other Metroidvanias. And you know what else there is, of course? That’s right, boss fights!

The music is provided by a soundtrack penned by Mentrix – an Iranian-born musician who mixes traditional and modern instruments.

Release not until 2024

It will still be a few months before Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is released. On 18 January 2024, the game will be released for the PC (Epic Store and Ubisoft Store), PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X/S/One as well as the Nintendo Switch
