How To Change Your Name In League Of Legends

Whenever you start playing on a new account in League of Legends, the system will be asking you to choose a username and a summoner name. While the names you choose are going to be yours going forward, there might be times when you wish to change them due to trends or just generally wanting to refresh your nicknames.

Lucky for you, League of Legends allows you to change them to your liking in quite an easy way. That said, there are some conditions and some limitations as well. In this guide, we will be going over all the steps needed to change your name on League of Legends and how to get access to a new IGN.

Steps to change your Summoner Name (in-game name)

This is usually the most common name change that players do. Many people will often want to get rid of their previous Summoner Name to stay up to the new trends, or even support their favorite teams by having their team tag before their nick.

The name-changing process is relatively easy but it’s not a cheap one – changing your nick will cost you 1300 RP ($10 if you purchase the RP with the appropriate option) or 13,900 BE. The Blue Essence price is quite high, considering the number of champions you can unlock with that amount. Make sure to evaluate if it’s worth changing your nick, especially if you want to spend 13,900 Blue Essence.

Follow these steps to change your name in League of Legends:

Click on the “Store” button in your League of Legends client

Once you’re in the store, click on the “Account” button.

Once you’ve reached the “Account” section in the League of Legends store, click on the “Summoner Name Change” button.

Enter your new desired name, and click “check name”. If your new name is available, you can unlock it!

What happens if the new name you want is unavailable?

Unfortunately, it means that the name you cannot use the name you want. If you want to have a mainstream or trending name, the chances of you getting the exact nickname are going to be low. That said, there are some alternatives so you can get a similar version: many players use the ASCII characters to “bypass” the name check and it works most of the time.

Otherwise, you have to hope that other players will change their nick and make it available. One thing worth noting: some summoner names become available if the accounts linked to them are inactive on the game. According to Riot Games, if an account hasn’t played any games for an extended amount of time, their Summoner name will be made available. The summoner name will stay on the account until another player claims it. Once claimed by another player, the Summoner name will be removed. If an inactive account loses its Summoner name, there will be a prompt to select a new Summoner name the next time that account logs in. Below are the conditions of the Inactive Summoner Name Rules:

Each Summoner name will have 6 months of inactivity protection upon creation.
Each Summoner name will earn an additional month of inactivity protection for each Summoner level above 6, up to 30 months. For example:

Levels 1-6: 6 months of inactivity immunity
Level 12: 1 year of immunity
Level 20: 1 year, 8 months of immunity
Level 30: 2 years, 6 months of immunity

Inactivity is defined to be a period in which no games of any kind (Summoner’s Rift, ARAM, etc) have been played on the account.
When inactivity protection expires, your name will be available to be claimed through the Summoner name Change service in the store.

So, to put it simply, players must jump into matches if they wish to protect their summoner name. One extremely important aspect is that playing other Riot games will not prevent your Summoner name from getting flagged as inactive.

That said, Riot won’t notify you if a name becomes available for security reasons, so it will be up to you to find out whether the desired nickname is going to be available.

How to Change Your Name in League of Legends for Free

Some people might not know this but you can get a name change for free in League of Legends. That said, this can be only a one-time exception and it must be done through the Riot Support. If you send them a ticket and use the title line “SUBJECT: Summoner Name Change”m they can make small changes to your name to include different spacing or capitalization. It’s a good way to save up the summoner name change fee if you happen to mess up your name while typing.

How to Change Your Name in League of Legends: Wild Rift

Unlike the PC version of League of Legends, Wild Rift uses a different profile update system and links your accounts using Riot ID. This ID serves as your username when playing game titles like Wild Rift, Legends of Runeterra, and VALORANT.

If you want to change your name, you can make tweaks directly on your Riot ID. Below are the full steps on what you need to do:

Go to the official RIOT login page here.
Use your username (the one you set up when first making the account) and password to log in
Click on the RIOT ID tab on the left side of the menu.
Click on the small Edit button on the right to change your Riot ID.
Enter your desired username and tag combination, then press Submit.

Your Riot ID (the combination of a username and a tag) has to be unique across all players and regions, so some names will not be available. At that point, choose a different tag if you wish to maintain the same username.

How to Change Your Account Name in League of Legends

If you haven’t played League of Legends in a while and ended up becoming inactive, Riot will notify you to change or verify your RIOT username through an email. This change was implemented with the release of the new Riot game titles in the past few years, with the goal of unifying all the credentials into one single account. By doing so, a player can get access to multiple games with just one account.

If you haven’t received such an email, head over to this page to update it. The account name you edit will be used to log into all of RIOT’s games and doesn’t need to be the same as your summoner name or Riot ID but it won’t be visible to others. How to Check Your Name History in League of Legends

RIOT doesn’t track your account information changes beyond the previous three months. That said, you can still request your user data by submitting a ticket and verifying your account information. Once you do (and wait out the mandatory 30 days processing time), RIOT will send you a range of all your recent data, including the account changes. If you wish to look beyond the three months, however, I’m afraid there is no other way to find out.

How to change my Valorant Name?

VALORANT uses the same Riot ID used for Wild Rift. Since it’s connected to multiple game titles, changing one will also mean changing the nick on the other titles as well, so be careful. That said, here are the steps to change the name on VALORANT:

Click on the RIOT ID tab on the left.

A Riot ID name and tag combination are unique across all players and regions so there might be high chances some of the popular nicknames are taken. If you want to maintain the same name portion, look to change the tag. Account usernames never expire. However, since these names are not visible to other players there is less of a reason to need to change them.
