XDefiant is poised to usher in the next generation of first-person shooter games. For a while, it was earmarked as being the ‘Call of Duty killer’, until the developer, Ubisoft, stressed that it doesn’t want to be known for that. It’s a fast-paced, top-tier competitive shooter that could have a bold future in esports, but is XDefiant crossplay? These days, it’s almost an expectation that a shooter is cross-platform from the start, but when it comes to XDefiant platforms, are there any crossovers?
This is a first-person shooter that has been developed with the community in mind. For each new update, considerations of the wider audience have been taken into account, and it seems like real fan service is being carried out with each new change made to the game. It looks great on the surface, it runs really well, and it has been well received during beta stages. It’s set to launch in the summer of 2023, but is XDefiant crossplay, and will you be able to play it with your friends on other platforms?
Let’s find out.
What Exactly is XDefiant?
If you’ve never heard of XDefiant, that’s fine – you’re not alone. Despite pulling in one million users during a beta phase, it still has some growing to do before it becomes a household name like Call of Duty or Battlefield.
Basically, XDefiant is a typical first-person shooter built around a 6v6 model and set firmly in Tom Clancy’s ‘multiverse’. It’s a fusion of various Ubisoft franchises, and the in-game characters are almost all taken from existing franchises, like Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, and The Division. It’s as traditional a first-person shooter as you can find, boasting intense gameplay, a faster pace than the competition, loadouts, customisation, and various game modes.
But will XDefiant be crossplay when it launches later in 2023?
Is XDefiant Crossplay?
For those looking to pair up across XDefiant platforms, we can confirm that yes, XDefiant is a crossplay title. That means that if you’re on a PlayStation 5 and your friend is on an Xbox Series X console, you can still play together – and that’s a feature that’s available by default. This is the full list of platforms that XDefiant is available on:
PC (from beta)
Xbox One (at launch)
PlayStation 4 (at launch)
PlayStation 5 (from beta)
Xbox Series X|S (from beta)
Despite having a string of beta phases, it has been confirmed that every player entering XDefiant’s universe when the game launches will be starting from the beginning. So, it doesn’t matter how much content you unlocked during the closed or open beta phases, you’ll still need to start with a fresh account.
In the run-up to the release of the game, Ubisoft released a stacked roadmap for the first year of XDefiant, promising great things to come.
There are bold claims that XDefiant will one day overtake Call of Duty in terms of popularity – particularly if Call of Duty keeps slipping up. We’ve already seen plenty of the best Call of Duty players in the world get involved with XDefiant, and their feedback has been dramatically positive. There’s every opportunity for XDefiant to step up and be the next best thing in the first-person shooter niche, but it’ll take a little more work to get there.
Are you looking forward to the release of XDefiant?
