In yet another bit of disappointing news, Square Enix has cancelled Just Cause Mobile.

It’s not been the best year for mobile games as Apex Legends Mobile has been canceled and the release of other anticipated titles like VALORANT Mobile and Rogue Company Mobile is nowhere in sight.

Just Cause Mobile canceled after several delays

Just Cause Mobile was first announced in 2020 with a release date set for 2021. It was being developed by a separate team at Square Enix instead of the original devs of the franchise, Avalanche Studios.

The legendary shooter title’s mobile port, however, was delayed in July 2021. Square Enix said in a statement that the release was being postponed to 2022 due to developmental delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Things started looking up in 2022, though, as the game entered regional early access in select Southeast Asian (SEA) countries in April. However, the year passed by with no update on the global release of the game. Eventually, Square Enix said in December that it was delaying the game again but didn’t reveal an expected release date.

Now, it’s finally been confirmed that the game has been canceled. Anne Leo, the global brand manager at Square Enix, broke the news on Discord with a short announcement.

“Today, we have important news about Just Cause Mobile. It is with great sadness that we are announcing the end of development for Just Cause Mobile. As of tomorrow, 3 July 2023, the game will no longer appear in digital stores. It is never easy to put forth an announcement of this nature, especially to our fans who have been awaiting the release. We sincerely appreciate the support you have given us.”

The official website and Twitter account of the game have been taken down as well.

Why has the game been canceled?

The statement didn’t reveal any specific reason for the cancelation of Just Cause Mobile. However, this comes after a global fall in revenue from mobile games.

With the pandemic restricting people to their homes in 2020, the global mobile game revenue shot up nearly 30 per cent to its peak in Q3 2021, according to a report by Sensor Tower. Since then, however, it has been constantly falling.

This could be a possible factor behind the canning of the game. However, the exact reason might never be revealed.

If you were someone who played Just Cause Mobile during the alpha stage and spent money on it, don’t worry. Square Enix has said that all Blue Diamonds purchased will be refunded to the Google Play account.
