Which are the best mid laners in League of Legends in season 13?

The mid lane position has always been the most highly coveted role in League of Legends. Being a mid laner requires not only great mechanical skills and carry potential, but also a great understanding of how to coordinate with teammates to make action on the map.

With the start of the new season, we’ve started seeing a large variety of champions played, giving mid laners options on how they want to be an impactful factor. While some prefer to play carry champions, others prefer having a cover a more utility role. That said, strong mid laners will be able to be proficient at both, performing consistently at a high level.

In this list, we take a look at the most dominant mid laners currently within each region. As we compare team strength internationally, how do these elite players shape up in a head-to-head battle?

1. LCK – Chovy, Bdd, Showmaker

Starting off our list, we’re taking a look at the Korean region: the LCK. Despite winning Worlds and having locked a full-Korean final last year, Korean teams have struggled to maintain the same level of play in 2023. Some players are still performing strong domestically, but they aren’t able to make that same difference when it comes to the international stages.

The first mid laner on our list is none other than Chovy. Individually speaking, he’s probably the best mid laner you could have, as he’s always able to get leads from the laning phase and win through sheer mechanics. We’ll have to see whether he can carry his team later in the season, but if Gen.G win yet another title, we probably could start considering Chovy among the legendary mids from the LCK

Behind him, we have KT Rolster’s Bdd, who is returning to form after a bad year on Nongshim RedForce. He and the rest of the team are looking convincing and the only ones who can potentially contest Gen.G for the title in Summer. He’s not exceptional like Chovy laning-wise, but Bdd shines in the skirmishes and teamfights. In particular, the mid lane meta seems to be working great for him, with control mages like Azir increasing in priority.

The last mid laner from the LCK is Showmaker. Even though the former world champion might have lost a bit of mechanics, he’s still one of the most consistent players and performing well above the results achieved by the team. His qualities are a bit the mix of Chovy and Bdd: strong laning phase with good teamfighting. If DK is able to somehow go to Worlds, you can probably be sure that Showmaker did something special.

Unfortunately, the mid lane legend Faker will not be considered at this time due to the injuries he has been suffering. If he were to return to form, he would probably make the list. But for now, we’ll have to make him sit out. We wish him a speedy recovery, and that he can show why he’s still one of the best mid laners in the world.

2. LPL – Knight, Scout, Yagao

The LPL mid laners have taken League by storm this year, dominating the Korean counterparts at MSI, and proving that the 2022 season was just a period of underperformance.

With how stacked the mid lane pool is in the Chinese league, three players are standing out from the rest: Knight, Scout, and Yagao. Knight has been the backbone of the JDG lineup, always stepping up when needed. While Ruler is usually the star of the show, Knight just makes sure he’s in a leading position whenever needed to take over. Mechanically, he’s probably the best mid laner of the LPL, and with how he played at MSI, you might consider him to be the best in the world.

That being said, the other two behind him are ready to devour him as soon as he makes a mistake. Scout, in particular, has been carrying LNG this split once again, totaling the highest amount of MVPs (14). By adding the 17 ones he received in Spring, Scout had 31 MVPs in 2023. It’s a pretty crazy number and proves his worth inside the team.

Yagao, in similar fashion, stepped up after returning from MSI. He might not be the carry player of the team, but he’s the right candidate BLG needs to make everything work. He has gotten more flexible in his playstyle, becoming the secondary carry in Bin’s stead when it’s needed. A great thing is that he’s not resource-intensive compared to other mids, but he’s still able to extract good stats. He will be one to watch when Worlds comes around: that might be his chance to get revenge and become the World champion.

3. LEC – Caps, Humanoid, Vetheo

EU has been notoriously famous for growing great mid lane talents… so many that a few of them ended up going to NA. Luckily, the region still has amazing players to count on.

Caps, despite not having the same dominance he became known for, continues to be the most solid player in the mid lane pool. His MSI wasn’t the best, but there is no one who can actually match him on domestic soil. His test, though, will be when G2 heads to the international stages: the region needs the best version of Caps if EU wants to fight against the LCK and LPL.

Behind him, the two players that have delivered better performances are Humanoid and Vetheo. That being said, this is based on their recent form, and they will need to keep that up going forward. If we have to consider the entire year as a whole, the best mid laner after Caps would probably be Nisqy.

4. LCS – jojopyun, Gori, EMEN3s

To close off our list, we have NA. The mid lane pool has always been a little lackluster in North America, with several imports mids coming to the region to increase the competitive level. After half a season, however, the top three mid laners from the LCS are pretty much locked in, with EG jojopyun, GG Gori, and C9 EMEN3S beating the rest both in terms of highest peaks and consistency.

The Canadian mid took the league by storm after gaining recognition as a solo queue prodigy back in 2020 and he’s probably going to be the greatest domestic mid lane talent in the years to come. Insanity had decent performances as well, but he’s only played this split so it’s hard to compared him.

Gori and EMEN3S, instead, are the two Korean imports. While the latter already made a name for himself as soon as he reached the NA region, Gori has convinced everyone performance after performance, and leading Golden Guardians to the top of the LCS. He’s quite a flexible player and even though he might not be the flashiest player, you can be sure he will deliver when it matters.
