Every week the Epic Games Store gives away one or more games. This time you can pick up a cool indie shooter and a real real-time strategy classic for free
The Epic Games Store is a constant source of a never-ending stream of free games. For gamers who like to live cheaply, there’s reliably one or more titles to pick up for free every seven days.
This week, Epic has two treats in store for you. The brightly coloured indie shooter Severed Steel and the Homeworld Remastered Collection, which contains parts one and two of the 4X classic. Both have around 90 per cent positive reviews on Steam.
If you want to strike, you can pick up both titles now (on Epic’s website). The offer lasts until August 3.
Severed Steel
What is it about?
Severed Steel is a fast-paced first-person shooter with a fluid stunt system, destructible voxel environments, heaps of bullet-time and a pretty cool protagonist. You play Steel, a one-armed sniper with a quick trigger finger. To take out your opponents, you run along walls in best parcour style, jump, do somersaults and shoot around in a lively manner.
Suitable for whom?
For those who like fast-paced gameplay and prefer to shoot everywhere in shooters instead of camping in corners for hours, Severed Steel is just right. The game is all about movement and, on top of that, impresses with a futuristic cyberpunk look and a groovy electro soundtrack. Those who tend to get headaches from fast movements are advised not to play this game.
Homeworld Remastered Collection
What’s it about?
The Homeworld Remastered Collection contains the first two parts of the popular real-time strategy series, both in the remastered version and the classic version. In Homeworld, you command your fleet and build up your own armada in the course of over 30 single-player missions. In the course of time, you can research new types of spaceships; from light fighters to huge carrier ships. On top of that, there’s a multiplayer mode.
For whom?
Homeworld is aimed primarily at the strategists among you. Thanks to the real three-dimensionality of the space maps, you don’t just send your units forwards or backwards, but also upwards and downwards. Accordingly, you have to choose the best unit types, fleet formations and flight tactics for each situation. Those who like to be challenged will definitely get their money’s worth here.
Was there a free game for you this week? Which of the two titles did you pick up and why? Are you more of the shooter faction or are you a tried and tested strategist? Or do you bag every game gift anyway, regardless of whether you plan to actually play it? Feel free to write us in the comments column.
