Payday 3 is one of the most hotly anticipated shooters of the past months – and finally the system requirements for PC players are here. However, one circumstance is causing criticism.

The time has come on September 21, 2023: The release of Payday 3 – after all, number 6 on the current Steam wish list charts – will take place on this day and let us again happily loot through banks & Co.

While the current-gen consoles around Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S have a comparatively easy time with such releases, PC lovers are faced with the question of the system requirements before every such release.

In the case of Payday 3, the developer studio Starbreeze drops the mask for the first time on the (Steam website) and announces which minimum requirements or recommended specs PC players will have to meet.

Payday 3: System requirements at a glance

You have almost exactly seven weeks left to check your computer for the following specs and upgrade if necessary:

Minimum requirements:

Operating system: Windows 10

Processor (CPU): Intel Core i5-9400F

Graphics card (GPU): Nvidia GTX 1650 (4 GB)

Memory (RAM): 16 GB

Recommended:

Operating system: Windows 10

Processor (CPU): Intel Core i7-9700K

Graphics Card (GPU): Nvidia GTX 1080 (8GB)

Memory (RAM): 16GB RAM

The developers have not yet commented on the required memory. AMD equivalents for the CPU and GPU are also missing in both cases, which we will provide you with in the following table according to our assessment:

Minimum
Recommended

Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 5 3600
AMD Ryzen 7 3700X

Graphics card (GPU)
AMD Radeon RX 570 / RX 6500 XT
AMD Radeon RX 6600

The AMD equivalents to the specs known so far.

Also unclear remains the resolution as well as the refresh rate Starbreeze Studios refers to with the given specs.

It should also be noted that although the game was initially developed in Unreal Engine 4, according to the (official FAQ) it will be switched to Unreal Engine 5 at a later date. Whether this will also add the UE5 features such as Lumen and Nanite and thus ensure higher requirements is, however, not yet certain.

One requirement that is causing trouble in both recommendations, however, is the broadband connection. Payday 3 requires always-on, i.e. a constant internet connection – the community anger was not long in coming!

The reason given for the step is, among other things, technical necessity. Will this appease the critical voices?

What do you think of Payday 3’s always-on requirement? Is this a reason for you not to buy it? Can your PC handle the system requirements right from the start or do you need to help out? Let us know in the comments!
