Super Mario Bros. Wonder will be released on the Nintendo Switch in 2023. Everything you need to know about it can be found in our overview.
Finally, we can look forward to a new Super Mario game on the Nintendo Switch again! The publisher announced this on 21 June 2023 at the Nintendo Direct
We don’t have to wait long – the game will be released this year. We’ve collected all the info for you
When is the release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder?
You can even pre-order it for 59.99 euros in the (Nintendo eShop)
What is the gameplay like and what is new?
In the new Mario adventure, you’ll travel to the Flower Kingdom and, of course, you’ll have to protect it from Bowser, who is after the power of the miracle flowers.
In Wonder, there are a total of seven different worlds with several levels that you can travel to. Among them are an underwater world, a desert and a mysterious mushroom forest. There are also open areas where you can move around freely and choose your stage.
As you would expect from a 2D platformer, the screen scrolls sideways as you have to overcome the various enemies and obstacles.
In Wonder there are some new items and enemies that we introduce to you here:
Wonderflowers: These are special items that change the circumstances of the respective level. Sometimes pipes come to life, Mario stretches or you suddenly fall out of the sky.
Wonder Seeds: The Wonder Seeds allow you to reverse the changes of the Wonder Flowers. You can find them in the stages, but you can also get them when you complete a level. You also need the miracle seeds to unlock some levels.
Chatty Flowers: You can find them in levels and interact with them. They talk to you, can give you tips and also coins.
(There are some new enemies waiting for you in Super Mario Bros Wonder.)
Hoppers: A new kind of enemy. They mimic your jumping behaviour and jump when you jump.
Melon Piranha Plants: These enemies spit seeds into the air when you approach them.
Skewer Oak: These bird-like enemies fly straight at you. They resemble darts.
Fall Block: The blocks can now even plough through jelly.
Wrap: A kind of mummy that can be unwrapped if you stand in the right place to destroy it.
Sagaaahs: These enemies devour anything that gets in their way.
and many more…
Of course you will also encounter familiar enemies like Gumbas, Lakitus or Buu Huus.
In addition, you can collect both the classic and purple coins. While both are stacked, there are also three special purple flower-shaped coins with a 10 on them that also count as a fixed collectible item in a level.
Further, no more increasing numbers are displayed, but comic-like labels from “good” to “wonderful” when defeating several enemies in a row.
What new ability is there in Super Mario Bros. Wonder?
Whoever was on social media after the announcement has certainly been overwhelmed by “Benjamin Blümchen” comparisons. That’s because Mario showed off his new transformation during the trailer: He became a big, fat elephant
When you become a pachyderm, you kick opponents off the stage in a high arc with your feet and your trunk. You can also collect water in your trunk and interact with the environment.
Your size also helps you to easily walk over small chasms, and in elephant form you are enormously strong, so that you can easily smash blocks.

But there are more power-ups that you can unlock:
Bubble Form: You can create bubbles to catch and defeat enemies that are both near and far from you. You can also use the bubbles as a platform to get to higher ground.
Drill Form: You get a drill hat that allows you to easily clear out spiky or armoured enemies. You can also drill into the ground, dig into floors and ceilings to avoid enemies or barriers.
Fire Form: You can shoot fireballs around you. This ability is already known from other Mario games.
For each level you have the possibility, similar to Mario Kart, to keep an additional ability in reserve. You can swap these within the stage. The power-ups are available for all characters.
In addition, during the course of Wonder you will unlock the so-called Badges which give you unique abilities and can thus change the way you play.
Fall Cap Badge: You can slow down your fall.
Climb Jump Badge: You can climb walls more easily.
Dolphin Kick Badge: You get a speed boost in the water.
Duck High Jump Badge: You can jump extra high.
Vine Shot Badge: You can shoot vines in midair to cling to walls.
Rescue Jump Badge: You can cushion fatal props to save yourself.
Feeler Badge: You can find important objects.
Coin Magnet Badge: You can collect all the coins nearby at once.
Jet Propulsion Badge: You can now run permanently and even walk in the air for a short time.
Invisibility Badge: You can hide from enemies, but also from yourself.
and many more…
You can only equip one badge per level. This can be done within the worlds or before the start of a level.
Some of the badges can be obtained through special test levels, otherwise you can buy them in the shops on the world map. You will need the flower coins to do this.
Is there a co-op mode?
Yes, you can play with a total of 4 people on one Nintendo Switch and defeat Bowser’s nasty minions together – and not only that.
There are even more selectable characters than usual this time. In addition, two of them take no damage:
Mario
Luigi
Peach
Daisy
Yellow and Blue Toad
Toadette
Yoshi (takes no damage)
Mopsie (takes no damage)
This is the first time Daisy has made an appearance as a playable character in a classic Mario game. Previously, she was only available in sports and party games, Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros.
If you are defeated during the level, you will continue to float through the stage as the Phantom. Teammates can touch you to give you another life. Yoshi can also let teammates ride on his back.
You can also play online with up to four players. However, a private online room must be opened for this purpose.
