This past weekend, the first ticket to the grand final of the current LEC season was punched. Record champions G2 Esports shone once again

There have been quite a few changes and revamps in the LEC this year. Instead of two, there are three splits, split between Winter, Spring and Summer. However, it is still G2 Esports that seems to dominate the league on a whim. With a small slip in spring, the team could win two of the three splits. At the moment, it also looks like the Summer Split Championship could be followed by the Season Championship.

Last Sunday, the first of two finalists was determined in the Upper Bracket Final. G2 Esports met the MAD Lions, who had previously defeated Excel Esports 3-0. But as impressive as the organisation once founded in Madrid was against the Englishmen from Excel, the roster seemed to have no chance in the duel with “season ticket champion” G2.

Can’t wait to lift another trophy in Montpellier

The Madrilenians’ weaknesses were already exposed in the first game when they suffered seven kills after less than eleven minutes played, while G2 secured the first Dragon at the same time. That the Lions are capable of keeping up competitively, however, was proven in the second match of the evening. In this one, the MAD Lions equalised G2’s lead and ensured that they would not be sent to the boards 3-0 like Excel.

Short-lived resurgence

In the end, however, levelling the score was to turn out to be a short-term flash in the pan. Neither in round three nor four did the three-time LEC champions have anything to counter the record champions. This means that G2 will once again be in the final, while MAD Lions will face FNATIC in the semi-finals and lower-bracket finals respectively.

Both fixtures will take place next Saturday, 09.09.2023 and one day later in Montpellier, France in front of a live audience
