A jump into the water looks much better in Cyberpunk 2077 than in Starfield. But for developers at CD Projekt, the comparison is unnecessary.

Starfield has quite good ratings for its release, but also has to take some criticism, for example in our (Test). Comparisons to other games, such as No Man’s Sky, Star Citizen or Cyberpunk 2077, are drawn again and again.

One fan, for example, makes fun of graphic effects and gameplay elements that look much better in CD Projekt’s role-playing game. But two Cyberpunk developers also think that this is unfair.

Starfield vs Cyberpunk

Starfield knows how to impress with its graphics in some places: The role-playing game offers us atmospheric views and dramatic sunsets. On the other hand, the animations and faces of many of the characters look outdated, which repeatedly causes ridicule.

In a video Starfield is now compared with Cyberpunk 2077, and even without comments the statement is clear: water effects would look significantly worse in Bethesda’s role-playing game, and characters would not react to being threatened with a gun. Whether such a comparison of two different games makes any sense at all is, of course, another matter.

No fair comparison

The comments on the Twitter video already put its statement into perspective: Many users think that Starfield should be compared to Cyberpunk 2077 at its release. At that time, the role-playing game suffered from considerable technical problems and bugs.

And even two developers from CD Projekt think the video makes little sense: Lore designer (Patrick Mills) writes:

How times have changed

(This false criticism is actively damaging the way players interact with the medium and I hate it. But it’s very funny to see after hundreds of these videos were made to make fun of Cyberpunk 2077.

And level designer (Miles Tost), who is also working on Cyberpunk 2077, adds in a response:

And to be fair, most of those items in the comparison have been added/improved by us post-launch.

And to be fair, most of the things shown in the comparison were added or improved by us after launch.

Whether and how Starfield will improve with updates and expansions remains to be seen. There was already a day one patch before the release, and more updates will probably follow soon.

Are elaborate water effects and graphics important to you in a role-playing game like Starfield? Or do you focus entirely on quests, crafting and combat? How do you like the space role-playing game so far, and do you think a comparison with Cyberpunk, No Man’s Sky or other games makes sense? Feel free to write it in the comments!
