There are a few big fighting game esports events coming up this month, but one of the biggest for South Africa is Cape Town Showdown. This is a fighting game event featuring two of the biggest games around right now. This tournament might only have two of the major fighters here, but they’re both substantial tournaments.
This is a great chance to see some players in a region that doesn’t get as much focus. With international tournaments like the Capcom Pro Tour and Tekken World Tour bringing in players from around the world, this is a great chance to see who the top players in this region are. The Showdown is taking place over September 16-17, hosted by Random Select Events. The Cape Town Showdown is going to feature two major tournaments. These are the main events you can catch over the weekend.
Street Fighter 6 at Cape Town Showdown
The Street Fighter 6 event at Cape Town Showdown is going to see players fighting it out in 2023’s biggest fighting game. The tournament will be taking place in a general pools format, followed by a double elimination bracket. There are some decent players already signed up like JabhiM and Book. It’ll be interesting to see if the top competitors here can make it to the Capcom Cup in later qualifiers too.
Tekken 7 – Tekken World Tour Event
The other major event is for Tekken 7. While we’re still gearing up for the Tekken 8 release date, there’s plenty of life left in 7 for competitive play. This tournament has a bit of an edge though, it’s a part of the Tekken World Tour. There’s a $1,000 prize pool along with points for the wider tournament at stake too. Since this is a qualifier event, there are some big players showing up like Anakin, chikurin, Arslan, CBM, and PINYA.
Those are the two major events at Cape Town Showdown. Between a TWT event and a bracket for the biggest release of this year, it’s an exciting tournament and a good opportunity to see how players perform in this region.
