Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the biggest smash hits of 2023, tantalising audiences the world over. It’s a fantastic follow-up to a series that had previously felt abandoned, and the gap between this game and its predecessor lasted more than twenty years. It’s a brilliant multiplayer game that features both online and local co-op, but is Baldur’s Gate 3 crossplay? That’s the question on everyone’s mind at the moment, and we’re going to answer it.
If you’ve been wondering whether you can play Baldur’s Gate 3 cross-platform – from PlayStation 5 to PC, for example – then we’re about to make the answer clear. These days, most games that are multiplayer are also cross-platform, but there are still a few exceptions to that rule. Is that the case here? Is Baldur’s Gate 3 crossplay?
Let’s find out.
Is Baldur’s Gate 3 Cross-Platform?
At the time of writing, there are no crossplay features in Baldur’s Gate 3. That means that if you’re playing on PlayStation 5, you can’t go on an adventure with your friends on PC – or soon, or Xbox. It isn’t yet known when Baldur’s Gate 3 will be released for Xbox, but it’s coming.
However, that doesn’t mean that there won’t ever be crossplay functionality introduced to the Baldur’s Gate 3 ecosystem. When the game was released on PlayStation 5 on September 6th, developer Larian Studios confirmed that they’re working on PC and console-based cross-platform functionality, but that’s roadmapped for a future update. But even with that in mind, there are some cross-platform mechanics that we can’t forget about.
By that, we mean that Baldur’s Gate 3 is cross-progression compatible. So, if you’re playing Baldur’s Gate 3 on PlayStation and you switch over to PC, as long as you’ve linked up your Larian Studios account with your game, you can access your saves on any platform. That’ll include the Xbox version whenever it’s released in the future.
Unfortunately, that means you’ll need to buy two copies of the game to soak up that benefit – but perhaps you’re just that big a Baldur’s Gate 3 fan.
