In a recent interview, the President of Activision, Rob Kostich, revealed that the publisher (and associated studios) has Call of Duty mapped out up until 2027. It’s a sizeable roadmap that is powered by Activision ‘constantly being in the planning phase’, and having up to 3000 developers on the books, all working on Call of Duty. This interview came shortly after the twentieth anniversary of Call of Duty, an epic milestone for any franchise to achieve while remaining active.

In this interview, Kostich took a deep dive into what has made Call of Duty so successful. He attributed the success to such elements as 2009’s Modern Warfare 2, which was arguably the defining moment in Call of Duty’s history – it’s still seen as the best Call of Duty game ever today. While we know what’s coming in 2023 with Modern Warfare 3, and we have our expectations of what’s landing in 2024, the years after that seem unmapped to an outside observer.

What Are Call of Duty’s Plans Until 2027?

It stands to reason that Activision has stepped back from the intention to take Call of Duty away from the annual release model. Instead, it looks like that yearly release will remain in place – such is the case with the arrival of Modern Warfare 3, which lands on November 10th, and the impending reveal of 2024’s Call of Duty.

Next year, it’s expected that a Treyarch-backed Call of Duty will be released, but what it’s going to be, nobody knows. From early leaks, it looks like Call of Duty 2024 will be set in the Gulf War – making it the first game in the series to land in that particular theatre. It’s certainly got the right make-up for a Call of Duty game, and other franchises – such as the older ‘Conflict’ games – have fared very well in that arena.

Regardless of what it is, it’ll be one of two things:

An all-new IP
An extension of the legendary Black Ops franchise

It’s assumed we won’t have any news regarding that particular release until midway through 2024.

Activision’s Boss is Bullish

Rob Kostich spoke fondly about Activision’s efforts to shape Call of Duty into the titan of a series that it is today. He praised the constant and consistent efforts from the company’s studios to deliver top-notch results:

‘Throughout our process, we listen, we certainly learn by things that we’ve done in the past, things that have been successful, maybe even things that haven’t been successful in the past. Then we also, as we go through any iteration of any new game, any new phase, we’re constantly testing that with players and making sure we’re hitting the right marks. Ultimately, the most important test of anything is just how does the game feel in your hands, when you’re playing it, how does it feel? That’s what we pay particular attention to as we’re going through new iterations.’

His transparent words formed a lengthy interview with VentureBeat. He has been with Activision since Modern Warfare 2’s release back in 2009, and he refers to the many Call of Duty games as ‘his children’. It’s encouraging to know that there’s someone so passionate about the franchise at the helm, and I’m sure that Call of Duty’s legacy will continue to grow far beyond 2027.
