This weekend saw a new stage happen for the 2024 Apex Legends Global Series. We should have had the climatic NA ALGS Regional Finals. A chance for players to prove they’re the best, up against the highest-level lobbies. Instead, we had yet another catastrophe as another year of the ALGS descended into technical problems. This time, a pretty huge hack happened midway through.
Fans tuning in over the weekend would have seen the games begin as normal. That’s before a hacker in Apex seemingly took control. They managed to alter the games of multiple contestants, essentially gifting them cheats in-game. It’s derailed the entire competitive integrity of the ALGS Regional Finals, and we’ll have to see them re-run next weekend. What does it mean for the overall integrity of the tournament though?
ALGS Regional Finals Ruined by Hack Mid-Game
Part way through the ALGS Regional Finals for North America, a major hack took place. During a live match which would see teams qualifying for the Split One playoffs, a number of teams got interfered with.
Midway through the game, two different players noticed they had cheat tools enabled in their game. Upon noticing, both players left the game pretty confused about what was happening. Both Genburten and ImperialHal were hit by it. These two are fairly well-known Apex players, which has guaranteed the biggest audience for these hacks.
After the ALGS Regional Final hack happened, it was confirmed that the finals would be re-run. The North American finals specifically have been delayed until further notice. In the past, we’ve seen similar ALGS bugs derail matches. This is by far the biggest disruption though and one to come from an outsized source.
Why Can’t Apex Fix Their Cheating Problems?
The hack at the ALGS Regional Final comes in the middle of a major problem for Apex. Cheating has gotten out of control.
There are always players who will try to cheat in FPS games, but typically developers can keep them at bay. This latest demonstration from the ALGS shows those using hacks have a significant influence on the game. Clearly, something more needs to be done to address the blatant security and cheating problems. They’re currently causing major headaches for normal players and destroying any chance of a competitively fair Apex esports community.
