How beautiful can a game from 2018 look? The Greece episode of Assassin’s Creed has an impressive answer to that question.
Kaliméra! Or Kalispéra, depending on what time of day you’re reading this article. It doesn’t matter, because this is not a Greek language course, but a Wow, the game looks fantastic message for all graphics fetishists and those who want to become one.
Don’t worry, for once this has nothing to do with the Unreal Engine 5. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is known to be based on Ubisoft’s in-house engine Anvil Next and it is also extremely potent. The YouTube channel of (Digital Dreams)
, known for such videos, proves just how much.
You don’t want to read now, you want to watch – I get it. But don’t forget to set the video in the YouTube player to at least 4K to get a good impression of the graphics!
How demanding is 8K in AC: Odyssey?
Besides the ultra-high 8K resolution (7680 x 4320 pixels), Digital Dreams has added fake ray tracing. Fake that’s because it’s not ray tracing natively programmed into the game, but a third-party solution of the tool (Reshade).
Here, only the depth information contained in the screenspace (the visible image section) is used for the simulated ray tracing effects, which means that the result cannot keep up with native RT. Nevertheless, many fan’s eyes might consider the implementation to be pretty.
The 8K look is demanding even as it is: Although Digital Dreams does not show any performance data, it can be assumed that even with the Geforce RTX 4090 used, a frame rate beyond 100 FPS is not possible, quite the opposite. Here, the 60 FPS should already be a hurdle that is not always overcome.
8K resolution or not, ray tracing or not: What counts for us is your opinion! What do you think of the video by Digital Dreams? Do your eyes glaze over at the sight of the graphic splendour or does what you see not knock your socks off? Have you already tried 8K resolution in your favourite games and if so, how did it go?
