In the Xbox Show Developer Direct, the developers from Obsidian Entertainment show off the combat, quests and world of Avowed

At the Developer Direct there were not only some new gameplay scenes from the role-playing game Avowed to see, the developers also explained how they are designing the combat system, the quests and the world of the title. There is still no fixed release date, but with the fall 2024 the release window has narrowed a little.

How the battles work

The developers went into quite some detail about Awoved’s combat system, which they describe as particularly flexible

We fight with melee weapons such as swords and shields, equip pistols and other firearms for ranged combat or use wands to cast powerful spells.

We face many different enemies that require special tactics: Some of them are particularly aggressive, others heavily armored. We should take out healers first, otherwise we’ll have a hard time dealing with their allies.

We don’t have to commit to one fighting style, but can quickly switch between saved loadouts during battles: Instead of sword and shield, we can carry two wands at the touch of a button.

The battles should be challenging, but still doable.

This is what awaits you in quests

In the quests, the decision seriesit is emphasized with an example:

We often have to make difficult decisions, some of which can have unforeseeable and serious consequences after the end of the quest.

There is not always an obviously correct decision; moral gray areas also play a role time and again.

This is what the world looks like

(The world of Awoved has some great-looking scenery.)

It was confirmed earlier that Avowed does not have an open world. However, there will still be many regions and areas to explore

The Living Lands are said to be a wonderful but strange fantasy world. We visit deserts, forests, mountains and much more. Each region should have its very own character.

The design of the world has been inspired by many different cultures.

Avowed will be released in fall 2024 for PC and Xbox Series X/S. The game will also be available directly on release via Game Pass  Obsidian fan Peter explains why the role-playing game, which is often compared to Skyrim, is better off without an open world in his column, which we have linked above.
