Larian employees receive threatening messages from parts of the community. Now the publishing boss makes a statement

Baldur’s Gate 3 has gathered a huge fan community around it. Most of them appreciate the great role-playing game and the open communication from developer studio Larian. However, parts of the community are disappointed with the topic of modding and are reacting in an unacceptable way – with threatening messages to the developers.

Director of Publishing Michael Douse, who goes by Cromwelp in forums and on X (formerly Twitter), makes it clear that the senders are achieving exactly the opposite of what they are probably hoping for.

How Larian reacts to the situation

What exactly is the issue? After release, the studio works to release large patches that fix bugs and adjust or add content. Numerous fans have created mods that are usually incompatible after an update and have to be updated.

The disappointment of some fans about the lack of mod support may be understandable, but according to Larian it escalates to threatening messages to developers and community teams. Cromwell writes:

We’ll be talking in depth about what our mod support will look like soon. Been working on it since launch. As always, we’ll discuss it in our way with our community. Threats & toxicity against our devs & community teams will only harm the conversation. Please stop that.

We will soon talk in detail about what our mod support will look like. We’ve been working on this since launch. As always, we will discuss this with our community in our own way. Threats and toxic behavior against our developers and community teams only hurt the dialogue. Please stop this

Furthermore, he explains, 99.9 percent of the community are “the absolute best “, but it is probably inevitable that a few “lazy eggs” will interfere. Larian wants to continue to communicate transparently and openly – if this no longer works, it would have a negative impact on developers and fans alike

Some fans reacted with concern to these announcements because they fear that Larian could withdraw from dialog with them in the future. Cromwelp allayed these concerns in a further post and made it explicitly clear that Larian will always talk directly to the community. They can’t always say everything, but they are constantly working behind the scenes on exciting new features for the fans.

I reiterated our commitment to the team today. Larian always has and always will talk directly to its players. We might not always be able to say what you want to hear, but we’ll always be working away in the background on something cool, excited to show you. https://t.co/DckplsMttJ

Baldur’s Gate 3 has received six major patches since its release in August 2023. In addition, there are numerous smaller hotfixes that were released shortly after the updates and fix new bugs, for example. New features include better inventory management, an extended epilogue, a new ending for Karlach and the option to recruit Minthara in a not-too-evil playthrough.
