Super Smash Bros tournaments have had a weird week. Nintendo released new Smash community guidelines This has essentially put tournaments in a dangerous position since the rules are fairly strict about how the events can use games like Smash Bros. This has left some tournaments cancelled or changed, but we have still had some good news. Most recently, we’ve seen that the Battle of BC 6 is still going to go ahead!

Quite a few tournaments are currently having to register for licences from Nintendo. In light of the changes to the tournament guidelines, events like Coinbox have had to cut back Melee offerings. With a lot of players and fans currently worried about which tournaments will be able to run, those who are still going ahead are seeking to reassure people. Most recently, we’ve learnt that the Battle of BC 6 will still take place despite the changes.

Battle of BC 6 Still Going Ahead

The Battle of BC is one of the bigger tournaments for Smash. The next instalment in the series will be the Battle of BC 6, currently planned to go ahead for March 2024. However, a few tournaments planning on featuring Melee have run into problems with the more recent tournament guidelines. The organizers have clarified that the Battle of BC 6 is still going ahead though.

It seems the organizers have already sorted a licence for the event. Licence events have more freedom than those operating through the newly changed community tournament guidelines. Battle of BC and Genesis are now both tournaments that have clarified they’ve been able to get a licence for their events. We’ll still be able to see quite a few events where the best Smash players compete.

While some tournaments have been cancelled and run into problems, it’s great to see some are managing to keep things going. While this is definitely going to hit smaller tournaments hard, the licences from Nintendo do seem to be coming for quite a lot of organizers. Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come. If most organizers can get a licence to operate their events, then Smash might be able to keep running just as many big events despite harsher restrictions from devs.
