If you are losing fairly often against Volibear, find out which counters you can play to win more games in the 2024 LoL season.
Volibear counters in LoL – the three best choices
Volibear received some love in recent times with some needed buffs. Now he fares much better in the top lane and is able to exert his lane-dominant playstyle even more. Even though his combos are predictable, he’s the kind of champion that can just bully out out of the laning phase and dive you once he unlocks the ultimate. Luckily for you, there are plenty of counters in League of Legends: here are the best three.
If you’re fairly new to the game, find out how counter picks work in League of Legends. It will help you understand why counter picks are important, and how you need to take advantage of them to increase your win rate. Understanding how classes counter one another in LoL will also allow you to improve your game knowledge.
Vayne – the worst matchup
The rule of melee vs ranged in the top lane has always existed but imagine what happens when you get a ranged champion with the ability to dodge your abilities and knock you away. Well, Vayne does this and she completely annihilates Volibear in the top lane.
As the bear, you won’t be farming early on and even if you happen to get onto her face, she will just knock you away with the E. She will also outscale, meaning that the only way for you to win is through ganks or some well-thought roams.
Urgot – 1v1 me bro
While Volibear can win against Urgot early on, the matchup will slowly fall into the enemy’s hands the more the game lasts. Urgot has much more burst damage with his passive and the ultimate execute. The only way for Volibear to fight Urgot is by going the AP build but that means being a lot squishier. In most scenarios, though, Urgot will still prevail.
Twisted Fate – the meta counter
Twisted Fate is one of the most annoying counters in League of Legends. Flexed between three different roles, the champion also abuses his range and point-click stun to quickly rip through enemies’ health. Volibear will be put under pressure and as soon as he loses the lane priority, Twisted Fate is guaranteed to get free roams with his ultimate. That being said, Volibear has a few chances to punish him if Flash is up and the jungler is nearby: if you find a lead, you might power your way out of it.
Worst Volibear counters
K’Sante – free lane
K’Sante is in a weak spot but he struggles particularly against Volibear. This is because the latter ensures lane priority early on, and has much stronger trades. The only way for K’Sante to win is if Volibear somehow botches the dives. Otherwise, this matchup should just be about proc’ing the Grasp of the Undying and slowly scale up.
Camille – you don’t win the trades
As someone who wants to fight in close combat, Camille doesn’t beat Volibear since the former is weak when trades become extended. And just like K’Sante, she will have to give up the lane priority entirely. The only way to win is by slowly scaling to her items and find the right windows to engage and fight the winning pick during the fights.
How do you counter Volibear items?
Counters in League of Legends also happen through the itemization built. While Volibear has the advantage of building both AP or tank, you can check out the list of items to counter him, based on the class of champions you’re playing:
Bruisers: Sterak’s Gage, Frozen Heart
AD assassins: Guardian’s Angel
ADC champions: Guardian’s Angel
AP champions: Zhonya’s Hourglass
Tanks: Bramble Vest, Thornmail, Frozen Heart
What Champion counters Volibear?
The three best champions are Vayne, Urgot, and Twisted Fate. There are others you can consider such as Olaf, Trundle, and Shen but they are more situational picks and not as powerful.
Does Volibear counter Garen?
This is more of a skill matchup. Both champions have the ability to kill one another, especially early on. In most scenarios, though, if Volibear can land his E and heals W, he should prevail in the extended trades.
