BGMI Rising 2023 peaks at over 148,000 viewers
BGMI Rising featured sixty-four teams, headed by a popular creator, participated in the tournament for bragging rights and a share of the Rs. 1,000,000 (about $12,000) prize pool.
The tournament happened across a Group Stage (June 1 and 2), Semifinals (June 3), and the Grand Finals (June 4). Only 32 teams moved on to the semifinals while the Grand Finals featured 16 teams.
The peak viewership was recorded on the first match of Day One, which stood at 148,442 viewers. The average viewership for the whole tournament was 73,706.
It’s still not close the first esports tournament which happened when BGMI was initially launched back in 2021, when it recorded 537,000 viewers and had an average viewership of 216,000.
Directly comparing the Launch Party of 2021 to the BGMI Rising doesn’t necessarily mean that the game has lost most of its popularity. The Launch Party happened when BGMI was first released, making players curious to see a game being marketed as new on the big screen. Additionally, it was just a two-day affair while the Rising happened over four days.
However, comparing it with the previous official BGMI event before the game’s ban shows a drop in viewers. The BGMI Showdown, which happened in July 2022, days before the game’s ban, recorded 314,000 peak viewers. The average viewership stood at an impressive 123,000 viewers as well.
What are the reasons for the drop?
One reason for the lesser viewers can be the elimination of some top teams in the group stage itself. The Launch Party of 2021 received some backlash for not being very inclusive of regional creators with only 18 teams participating. The BGMI Rising, on the other hand, featured an impressive 64 teams.
However, some popular teams like Team Mortal, GodNixon, Ghatak, Vaadhi, and Mavi were eliminated in the group stage itself. This could have led to a drop in viewers.
Additionally, the BGMI’s 10-month ban period has certainly pulled a lot of players away from the game which can be the primary reason for the fall in viewers.
However, BGMI currently has close to no competition in the Indian games industry. New games like CoD Mobile and New State Mobile haven’t really picked up in the country while other rivals like Apex Legends Mobile have shut down.
Thus, the game is perfectly poised to regain its past glory. Additionally, third-party tournaments like the Villager Esports DOMIN8R Series and the Skyesports Champions Series with a $30,000 prize pool are already lined up to make it happen.
