The Blizzard-Moba Heroes of the Storm was thought to be dead. But a new team is now continuing development under a new name
The mid-2010s, before the big battle royale hype broke out, is considered the heyday of MOBAs: Dota 2 and League of Legends attracted millions of players worldwide every day and competitors such as Vainglory and Smite (both 2014) wanted a piece of the pie.
And Blizzard also sent its own challenger into the race with Heroes of the Storm 2015 This title brought a breath of fresh air to the genre by bringing together characters from the entire Blizzard universe – from Diablo to Warcraft to Starcraft.
HotS stood out for its team-oriented gameplay and the variety of its dynamic battlefields. However, despite its innovative approach and a small but loyal fan base, it was never quite able to assert itself against the heavyweights Dota 2 and LoL, so active development of new content was discontinued in mid-2022.

But there is light on the horizon: A team of modders has brought HotS back under the name Resurgence of the Storm and celebrated a rebirth within the Starcraft 2 engine, which has many new features and improvements in store.
The mod, which the team has been working on for over four years, not only offers balance adjustments for the well-known heroes and even a complete rework for Arthas, but also two completely new heroes, the two Protoss Selendis and Talandar.
You can see that Resurgence of the Storm looks almost indistinguishable from the original in the trailer, which also explains the changes and introduces the new heroes:
However, it is in the nature of the project that the mod is not as easily accessible as HotS. Although you can install it completely free of charge, there is no matchmaking – instead, games are organized via the (Discord) of the game.
Some heroes are also still missing, as not all models and skills can be transferred and replicated due to engine limitations. If you still want to take a look: The developers have a (detailed document) with installation instructions and pages of changes for you.
What do you think? Is Resurgence of the Storm a cool idea and possibly the beginning of a new era where fans revive abandoned games? How do you see the future of such fan-based mod projects? Or would it all be too much of a hassle for you to enjoy an old game again? Let us know in the comments!
