The Swedish (Embracer Group), a giant in the video game industry, is apparently planning another major change in its corporate structure. This time it could hit developer studio Gearbox Software, which is responsible for the popular Borderlands series . Embracer had only acquired Gearbox in 2021 for an impressive $1.3 billion and seemed to have taken another step towards expansion. But now all indications are that Gearbox could change hands in the foreseeable future.

The planned restructuring of the Embracer Group has already led to the closure of some developer studios, including Volution, the studio known for the Saint Row series  Although Gearbox Software is not facing closure, the studio is not expected to be owned by Embracer for the foreseeable future.

Embracer is currently working closely with investment banks such as Goldman Sachs and Aream & Co to explore the possibility of selling Gearbox Software. It seems that there are already potential suitors for the acquisition of the studio, but their identity is still unknown. Embracer Group’s stock price has performed positively since the potential sale was announced, which could indicate a strong interest in the studio.

Despite these developments, Gearbox Software plans to release games such as Homeworld 3 and Hyper Light Breaker in the coming year. In addition, “future experiences” in the Borderlands universe are planned. It remains to be seen how these changes will affect the future of Gearbox Software and the games they develop as Embracer Group continues to adjust its corporate structure and respond to changes in the video game industry.
