FACEIT has inadvertently revealed that, from the 2024 season onwards, COD Challengers will be hosted on its peer-to-peer competitive platform. This news surfaced today following eagle-eyed gamers spotting a Challengers ‘hub’ being added to FACEIT’s website. For the last few days, the Challengers scene has been in turmoil as no news about the circuit’s structure – or home – was revealed by Activision Blizzard.
It hasn’t officially been announced, but it has been rumoured for some time that FACEIT may pick up more responsibility in the Call of Duty scene. On Twitter, some prolific Call of Duty-themed profiles (insiders and outlets) reported on this news, further solidifying the credibility of the update.
New Home, New Hope
Moving the Challengers circuit away from GameBattles to FACEIT is, at first blush, a logical step. It’s no big secret that GameBattles is being closed down early next year, which means that the ‘path to the CDL’ has to start somewhere. For Activision Blizzard, no site other than FACEIT makes more sense. It was just a couple of weeks ago that FACEIT appeared on the ‘COD Competitive’ subreddit, posting a survey related to the Call of Duty community.
Before that, back in April, Activision Blizzard and ESL FACEIT signed a two-year deal that would see Call of Duty: Mobile brought into the Snapdragon Pro Series.
Earlier today, the GM of Call of Duty esports, Daniel Tsay, took to social media to stress that the team was ‘close’ to a solution for COD Challengers. Lo and behold, FACEIT publishes a COD Challengers hub complete with listings for ‘Cup’, ‘Elite’, and ‘Open’. Despite that having been unearthed, it’s not expected that COD Challengers will have any major presence at the first big CDL tournament of the season, which is due to take place in Boston in the new year.
Is This a Win?
If you’re plugged into the Challengers community, you’ll see that this is a win. It’s a revelation that’s being met with a positive sentiment across the board, and that’s for many reasons. Firstly, ESL FACEIT is one of the best competitive gaming platforms in the business. It has a monumental presence and hugely valuable backing, and it has tens of millions of users. It also makes use of a tried and tested anti-cheat system, which is nothing short of a massive victory for COD Challengers players.
Call of Duty is almost certainly set to officially join a line-up of top-tier esports titles already present on ESL FACEIT in the coming days.
