Super Smash Bros Melee is an unforgettable fighter. In the 20+ years since its release, it has been a constant fixture at fighting game events. Melee has never been quiet. It’s widely regarded as one of the best fighting games of all time. Nintendo’s relationship with competitive Melee has always been fraught though, which makes the recent unearthing of a certification from the very first Melee tournament all the more interesting.

YouTuber, Super Smash Collector, has posted a video covering a recent purchase which will definitely be of interest to Smash fans. They’ve tracked down a copy of a certification from a launch day event for Super Smash Bros Melee. While it’s hard to say, it’s likely from the first Melee tournament for one of the very first tournaments.

Certificate Found from First Melee Tournament

The Japanese certificate certifies that the holder competed in in-store tournaments right as Melee was unleashed in Japan. These were release day tournaments letting players compete against each other in a brand-new game. These early tournaments might not have seen the current advanced meta for the fighter being played, but it does serve as a fantastic example of how Melee has always attracted competitive attention.

According to SuperSmash Collector, the certificate is from in-store events on the launch day of Smash Bros. The certificate has spaces to fill out with the participant’s name and rank, but this collector has one in pristine condition. This find is a great demonstration of Smash (and fighting game esports) history.

Major fighters these days often host tournaments on release day and even before. SF 6 and MK 1 launch events have been some of the most exciting this year. This certificate shows this style of promotion was even opening things up for what would go on to be one of the biggest fighters.
