Donald Mustard, the former Chief Creative Officer at Epic Games, recently took to social media to share his thoughts on Fortnite becoming ‘a place’ or ‘a hub’ for gamers. It was then expressed that Fortnite has established itself well as a metaverse, something that other developers and tech titans have seemingly wavered on in recent months. With the recent updates to Fortnite, what was once ‘a game’ has become a full-fledged, self-sustained gaming ecosystem, and it’s a powerhouse.

In the last few weeks, we’ve had Epic Games reveal countless changes within the Fortnite scene. From the introduction of several games within the Fortnite ‘hub’ to an awe-inspiring event that featured the likes of Eminem, Fortnite has been exploding of late. It decimated previous peak player records during the ‘OG’ event that saw the original map return to the game, and it has been riding high ever since.

We’ve seen Epic Games leverage its brands to pull ‘Rocket Racing’ (Rocket League) and ‘Fortnite Festival’ (Rock Band) into the game, furthering the diversity of the games available inside Fortnite. From survival games to rhythm-based challenges, and from ambitious music events to next-generation technology changing the face of the game, Fortnite just can’t stop innovating.

In his post on Twitter, Donald Mustard revealed that most of this was foreseen back in 2017. He shared a hastily scrawled note that showed Fortnite becoming a ‘hub’, surrounded with battle royale, creative elements, survival modes, music, and more. It’s safe to say that Epic Games has well and truly delivered on what was planned.

There is nothing quite like Fortnite, that’s for sure. With the UEFN, the most creative gamers in the world are building their own experiences within Fortnite. In the last few months, we’ve seen some hugely successful custom games fleshed out by tech-savvy developers who want to make something worth playing. Not only that but these creators are, through the power of the UEFN, being financially compensated for their time and effort, which is huge for the next generation of the games industry.

Fortnite is its own metaverse, and it boasts unparalleled potential. At times, it’s impossible to guess what’s coming next, and that’s simply amazing for an industry that’s so hung up on predictable sequels, annual releases, and remakes. Fortnite is in a league of its own, and it’s getting to a point where it sells, markets, and even builds itself. It is absolutely impossible to imagine a future in the games industry where Fortnite doesn’t exist anymore.
