Moonring is a new retro RPG in the classic Ultima style that you can play completely for free from Steam.
Maybe Moonring isn’t an eye-opener visually at first glance, but there’s a lot of love for classic retro games like Ultima in this open-world RPG, along with a lot of content.
This love is also felt by fans of the genre, giving Moonring 100 percent positive reviews on Steam. Admittedly – there are currently only 58, but this almost overflow with praise.
The game comes from Dene Carter, an experienced developer who worked on the Fable series and also the first Dungeon Keeper.
What is Moonring about?
Moonring features a completely handcrafted open world with a retro neon look. The game world of Caldera lay in darkness for centuries until five gods appeared in the form of five moons.
The gods brought the dreams and the magic, but you are a dreamless one and unlike the rest of Caldera’s population, you can choose your own destiny. You are left with the choice of ascending the throne with a little skill, or even overthrowing the gods themselves.
The magic in the game comes from those same gods and depending on the phase of the moon the use of magic and thus the gameplay changes. For combat, or even its avoidance, you can also use a stealth system.
(A lot of text simply belongs in such old role-playing games.)
The elements also have an effect on the game. For example, if your character is wet, he is less susceptible to fire, but rotten status effects are stronger.
Dene Carter calls his game “a love letter to a type of game that is largely out of fashion.” But Carter is not alone in his love for retro RPGs.
Steam players celebrate Moonring
(Steam user Kiavik) says, “I would pay money for this game if I could,” and he’s not alone. Some even feel bad about not paying anything for it.
In his review, (Steam user Salarn) writes:
“Layers upon layers of systems and mechanics are masterfully revealed as the player progresses through the world, exploring dungeons in search of secrets and ultimately answers. “
You can download Moonring since September 27, 2023 (Free via Steam). You can expect a very classic, but well-done retro role-playing game, which has already won some convinced fans
Moonring seems to be a real tip for retro fans. Plus, it’s free, a 90 MB download, and runs on any toaster. Do you have a heart for such classic games or are the game elements too dusty for you? Will you give Moonring a chance? Feel free to leave us your opinion in the comments.
