The Digimon TCG has had its fair share of formats. From Evolution Cup to Ultimate Cup, TCG players have had ways to deviate from standard Digimon events tournament. 3v3s were sprinkled in in an official capacity in Japan during the game’s first year of release.
Official tournament support in the form of new prize cards has now also joined a full reintroduction and support of the format. Griffins Gaming was one of the notable community lead tournament organizers to run the Digimon 3v3 before its official support. The most recent iteration of the event saw 24 teams of 3. They faced off in 5 rounds of Swiss. After that, the Top 4 teams would play a Single Elimination bracket, seeded 1st into 4th, 2nd into 3rd.
Griffins Gaming Rules
The event, which took place in Birmingham, UK on October 15th, had some creative ruling. Early meta saw a mix of control, aggro and flex spots for 3v3 teams. However, in the official eastern format, players share a ban list, meaning that if a card is allowed at 4 copies in a deck, its up to 4 between each of the team combined. In this event, however, if a single copy of the card existed in a player’s deck, it couldn’t be used in either of their teammates’ decks. The idea here was simply forcing variety.
Players also locked in their seating positions at the start. They were matched up against corresponding players of the same seat number for the remainder of the event. Most teams opted for captains in the centre spot, however this wasn’t wholesale.
Top 5 Decks and Teams
After Round 5 of Swiss, 4 teams made the cut. 5th Place, bubbling out at X-1-1 utilised Royal Knights, Dorbickmon and Bloomlordmon.
Fourth Seeds and eventual winners, Team “CYMK” – Marcio “KBeeDS” Vilas Boas, Emily “emileenie” Townsend, and Harry “DHM” Taylor piloted Red Hybrid, Bloomlordmon and Alphamon respectively, dropping only 3 games each across the 7 sets played. Losing their first set and going on a 6 straight tear.
The 3rd Seeds brought Machinedramon, Belphemon and Bloomlordmon.
The 2nd Seeds took WarGreymon, ShineGreymon and Hunters to a 2nd Place Finish.
And the 1st Seed used WarGreymon, ShineGreymon and Machinedramon going undefeated until a nailbiter between the Alphamon and Machinedramon players finished Turn 5 in Overtime to break the tie 2-1 in favour of Team CMYK, ending their run at Tied 3/4.
CYMK’s win at Griffins Gaming marks the Fanboy3 store’s 2nd consecutive over the table large scale event, making them ones to watch going into November’s last regional before BT14’s release.
