Honor of Kings, the upcoming mobile MOBA title by Tencent, has been revealed as the latest title to join the Esports World Cup (EWC) 2024. The EWC, set to happen in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia this summer, is a multi-discipline esports tournament and is the replacement for the Gamers8 festival.
Level Infinite, the Tencent-owned publisher for the game, will be bringing the Honor of Kings Midseason Invitational Tournament to Riyadh. This tournament will feature a prize pool of $3 million — the same as rival MLBB’s Mid-Season Cup (MSC) 2024.
“The Esports World Cup is an exciting and unique opportunity to bring international esports recognition to the world’s most played mobile MOBA title. Honor of Kings is the latest example of our commitment to the mobile esports space, as we continue to prioritize our investment in the esports landscape. We can’t wait to kick off the launch of the Global Invitational Series with the Honor of Kings Invitational Season One on March 2 in Istanbul, and to offer aspiring competitive players from around the world the chance to become a champion through a new global mobile esport,” said James Yang, the senior director of Level Infinite Global Esports Center at Tencent Games.
Honor of Kings Invitational Midseason will happen in Riyadh, Saudi as a part of the Esports World Cup 2024
The Honor of Kings Midseason Invitational, set to happen in August, will see 12 teams from around the world competing for the title and a share of the $3 million prize pool.
Currently, Level Infinite has confirmed only one of the invited teams, which is China’s KPL Dream Team. This will be a roster consisting of the biggest stars from the King Pro League (KPL), the top level of competitive Honor of Kings esports in China.
Additionally, Honor of Kings will be collaborating with the Esports World Cup to launch in-game skins. The developer revealed in a press release that they will reveal more details later.
Honor of Kings bets big on esports
Honor of Kings isn’t currently available globally, though. At the moment, the game is under its testing period and is only available in Brazil. It will be coming, however, to the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey, Eastern Europe, and South Asia on Feb. 2. Level Infinite plans to release the game globally in a phased manner.
Today’s Esports World Cup’s announcement follows Honor of Kings’ earlier large-scale commitment to esports. The game is one of the biggest esports titles in China. Thus, as it releases globally, the developer is relying on esports as a major tool to grow the game’s player base. Especially as the game competes with rival title MLBB which already has a huge esports ecosystem in place.
To do this, Honor of Kings announced a $15 million investment into global esports in 2024 alone with four international tournaments. The first of these is the $300,000 Honor of Kings Invitational Series Season 1. This is set to happen in March 2024 in Istanbul, Turkey. The winner from here will compete in Season 2 of the tournament.
Furthermore, the top teams from Season 2 of the Honor of Kings Invitational Series will advance to the Midseason Invitational in Riyadh. That’s not all as the winner of the Midseason Invitational will earn a slot at the year-end Invitational Championship where the 2024 world champion will be crowned.
