Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was released in 2018, emerging as the ‘furthest-back’ game in the series, in chronological order. It tells the tale of either Kassandra or Alexios, siblings in Ancient Greece, torn apart by tragic circumstances and set on a path of glory, redemption, and vengeance. It’s one of the widely-debated games because it ‘misses’ a lot of the elements that are traditional to the series, so we’re answering one important question: ‘Is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey good?’

For some in the community, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was another one of those games that ‘can’t be classed as an Assassin’s Creed game.’ It’s one of the only games in the entire franchise to not feature either the Assassin Brotherhood or the Templar Order in any form, but that’s just because it’s too far back along the historical scale. It does still feature Those Who Came Before and a Piece of Eden, but the connections otherwise are quite slim.

With that in mind, is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey good and worth your time in 2023?

Why is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey So Different?

In Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, players travel further back than ever before in the Assassin’s Creed series. It’s set in 431 BC, and it’s one of the most mythical, fantastical titles in the franchise – which has always been a sticking point with fans. It features a close connection to the Ancient Greek gods and the mythology of the time, featuring Medusa, a Sphinx, Cyclops, and other wild monsters and figures from the tales of that age.

It boasts the RPG format that became typical of the series in 2017’s Assassin’s Creed Origins, which again, is an issue with some fans. It promotes open-ended gameplay and the ability to craft the exact character that you want, but it makes combat feel more arcade-like, challenging, and complex. There are ‘God-like powers’ to manage, near superhuman abilities, and a gargantuan open world to explore.

It’s so different to the rest of the series because it doesn’t actually feature assassins – or Templars. There are no hidden blades, stealth takes a back seat compared to high-octane, powerful combat, and there are few connections to the wider Assassin’s Creed universe in general.

So, is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Good?

It’s a subjective debate, but as a game, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is very good. It can be argued that it’s not a true Assassin’s Creed game, but it explores history in the same way as the franchise typically does, and it boasts the same core concepts – which is enough for most people. It’s stable, it looks beautiful on the screen, and the wide, open world is ripe for exploration. There’s enough content to keep players entertained for one hundred hours with ease, and the expansions that were released for the game expanded it perfectly.

It doesn’t matter how you want to play, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is there to accommodate you. It’s a brilliant game because you’ll go from being a disgraced mercenary to a demigod-like character with fearsome abilities within a few chapters, and there are some opportunities to really flex those skills. During the game, the player can take part in large-scale battles that feature almost endless crowds of enemies, and when powerful enough, they can be cut down like blades of grass – it’s very satisfying.

Finally, it’s worth considering that, thanks to its age, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey isn’t expensive. At the time of publishing, it’s featured on Ubisoft + and Xbox Game Pass, so if you’re a subscriber to those services, you can download it and get started.
