Capture The Flag is one of the most ‘traditional’ multiplayer modes you’ll ever see in a shooter game. Once upon a time, it was a staple of the Call of Duty series, taking up a key slot in the game’s esports ecosystem – before being replaced by other, ‘more innovative’ modes. For years, fans and players have been asking for a grand return of Capture The Flag, which hasn’t been a core game mode since 2017’s Call of Duty: WWII.
Recently, a post surfaced on Reddit asking users what they’d bring back to the Call of Duty landscape if they had the option. The user who wrote the post mentioned that they’d love to see Capture The Flag make an appearance in Modern Warfare III. Out of nowhere, Sledgehammer Games, the title’s developer, responded with a telling emoji that’s a clear nod to the mode potentially returning soon.
Will CTF Be The New Competitive Standard?
For the last few years, fans of the Call of Duty League, the top-tier tournament in the COD esports space, have been disappointed with Control. It’s the third game mode that has sat in the rotation since Black Ops Cold War, right alongside Search and Destroy and Hardpoint. However, it has long been a sticking point with fans – and players – as it’s not the most intuitive game mode and it typically unfolds awkwardly on whatever map it’s played on.
In the past, Capture The Flag was the third game mode – but the CDL emerged and that was made a thing of the past. For a brief time, Uplink was one of the most exciting third modes, giving players the task of stealing a neutral drone – an orb – and slamming it into the opposing team’s zone to score points. Since Control took… Control… Things have been a little sour.
But now, thanks to cryptic comments made by Sledgehammer Games on Reddit, fans are hopeful that Capture The Flag – commonly referred to as CTF – will resurface in the Call of Duty space. Could this become next year’s third game mode? It seems highly likely – it’s one of the most tactical and exciting modes available. For instance, it serves as one of the game modes of choice in the Halo Championship Series, and it makes for some good watching.
The only issue is, that there are many Call of Duty pro players in the CDL right now who are too young to have ever spent much time playing Capture The Flag. It’ll be a good chance for the ‘old heads’ to show them what it’s all about.
